We saw the first real upset of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 as in a Group B clash 2021 champions Australia went down to Zimbabwe by 23 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Australia did have their moments where they fought like we expect them to but were also exposed in certain areas and as a result they lost by 23 runs to slip to 3rd place while Zimbabwe made it 2 wins out of 2 games and are in 2nd place. There were a few holes and gaps that Australia were found wanting and we will list three reasons for you.
Managing to take only 2 wickets across the innings exposed Australia’s bowling.Â
Australia’s stand-in captain Travis Head won another toss and decided to bowl first looking at morning conditions being a 11am start and the aim was to take wickets and push Zimbabwe back. But things did not go according to plan for them. Credit to Marumani who was the aggressor and Brian Bennett who played an excellent knock and played through to carry his bat so that others could bat around him. But Australia failed to take wickets.
While the run rate was decent even from the bowling point of view, not taking wickets meant that Zimbabwe always had a chance to get to 160+ if not 180. The Aussies got 0 wickets in powerplay and then after a 61-run stand they got rid of Marumani as Marcus Stoinis picked up his wicket. Thereafter, another partnership brew as Ryan Burl played well alongside Bennett and took Zimbabwe forward as Australia’s premier bowlers failed to get wickets. Cameron Green got the other wicket of Burl which allowed Sikandar Raza to come and finish the innings.
But the rest of the bowlers who are the main bowlers got 0 wickets. So, the likes of Zampa, Nathan Ellis, Ben Dwarshuis, Matthew Kuhnemann to name a few were wicketless. This hurt Australia a lot. We still felt Zimbabwe should have got 180+ from 125/1 in 15 overs. They were 10-15 short but 169/2 was a competitive score on a used surface and day game. It proved to be match-winning. Australia needs to be more incisive and take wickets to do well in their next two games. Consistency has to be the key. Aussies were great against Ireland but not yesterday.
Losing 4 wickets inside the first 5 overs almost sealed the fate for Australia.Â
Chasing 170 for the win, Australia would have hoped for a flying start in powerplay as that is the best time to bat in Colombo. What followed was a disaster and shock for the Aussies. Yes, they got 13 runs off the first over bowled by Sikandar Raza but soon the floodgates opened. Josh Inglis was the first to go as the keeper batter went at the score of 13 runs. Cameron Green went when score was 24. Tim David came and went with the score 25 and then captain Travis Head went for 17 when the score was 29 in 4.3 overs.
Credit to Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans for the efforts as they picked 7 wickets between them in the end to rip Australia apart and bowled good balls. But if we look at the first 4 wickets in powerplay, those were loose shots to say the least. Australia looked like taking the game too likely and casual approach the top order batters and they paid the price for it. Yes, Head was a tad unlucky but shot selection was questionable from all batters that fell. This exposed them and the powerplay score was 38/4.
Though, Matt Renshaw and Glenn Maxwell recovered things for Australia post powerplay and kept the fight going, it was always going to be a bridge too far. Credit to Renshaw for playing a stellar knock but apart from Maxwell who went slow, the rest failed to turn up. Losing 4 wickets in powerplay generally leads to a defeat and that’s what happened to Australia. Going forward, Australia needs to apply themselves and not play shots from the get go. Even 45-50 in powerplay is decent if you have wickets in hand. The Aussies need to realise this importance quickly before it gets too late.
Continuous Failure of Travis Head a concern for Australia.Â
With captain Mitchell Marsh still missing out due to testicular injury, it was important that stand-in captain Travis Head steps up and leads from the front. But that has not happened and Head’s continuous lean run exposed the batting totally. In the last match, he got run out for a single digit score. In this game he hit some boundaries before getting bowled for 17.
With Josh Inglis and Cameron Green also missing out for single digit scores with Green scoring a duck and the returning Tim David also scoring duck due to rustiness, it compounded the problems for Australia. So, with Head batting at the top of the order it was imperative he as captain inspires others and takes the team head on. Even a cameo would have helped of 30-40 runs. But it was not to be and Head in T20Is has been hot and cold lately compared to Test matches.
With Marsh out and Steve Smith joining the squad as travelling reserve or as cover, Head is the key and will want to play a defining knock very soon. Perhaps against Sri Lanka in Pallekele as that match is a must-win game for the Aussies. If Head steps up, everything looks sorted and Australia can still bounce back and make it through to Super 8s. But this performance alongside the team’s performance has put the Aussies in a spot of bother for sure looking ahead.
What Lies Ahead.Â
So, Australia lost this game by 23 runs. They will next play Sri Lanka on Monday night 7 pm game in Pallekele while Zimbabwe next plays Ireland before locking horns with Sri Lanka. Job not done for the Chevrons in Group B but another win shall take them on the doorsteps of Super 8s. More action to come on Super Saturday as Ireland takes on Oman in SSC in Colombo in Group B game at 11 AM IST. This will be followed by England vs Scotland from Kolkata in afternoon game Group C at 3 PM IST.
The last game of the day features heavyweights New Zealand against South Africa live from 7 PM IST in Group D game in Ahmedabad. So, a lot to look forward as we have another triple header on Saturday.
