Chennai Super Kings are facing one of their toughest seasons in the IPL 2025, having lost five consecutive matches for the first time in the tournament’s history. The latest blow came at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk, leaving fans disheartened and the team under pressure. However, CSK’s batting coach, Mike Hussey, remains optimistic.
“We’re certainly not putting the white flag up just yet,” Hussey said, acknowledging the pain felt by fans, players, and staff.
Chennai Super Kings’ struggle sparks questions about team form and future
Hussey stressed the importance of unity during tough times, saying this is when “you really find out who your true supporters.” He also expressed full faith in the leadership of the Chennai Super Kings group—Stephen Fleming, MS Dhoni, and Ruturaj Gaikwad—to keep the team grounded and focused.
Despite cycling through 18 players this season, the Chennai Super Kings are still trying to find a winning combination. Their recent match saw them score just 103 for 9 in 20 overs—their lowest total at Chepauk—prompting many fans to leave the stadium even before KKR began their chase.
Still, Hussey believes the team can recover quickly if they build momentum and stick together.
“We haven’t been playing good cricket consistently… but that’s not to say things can’t turn around and can’t turn around quickly.”
CSK leadership faces criticism but stays united
With public criticism mounting, Hussey defended the team’s experienced Indian players, countering claims they are past their prime. He referenced success stories like Shane Watson and Ajinkya Rahane as proof that seasoned players can still deliver.
“I still think we can find their best and see some great performances from them,” he added.
Young talents like Vansh Bedi and C Andre Siddarth remain on the bench. According to Hussey, the team won’t fast-track newcomers just for experimentation’s sake, insisting CSK are still competing to progress in the tournament.
“We’re still here to try and progress in the tournament as far as we can.”
CSK’s Struggles Reflect Urgent Need for Fresh Talent and Tactical Shift
In 2019, only one team, Sunrisers Hyderabad, managed to qualify for the playoffs with a 6-8 record, finishing in fourth place. Similarly, Chennai Super Kings still has the theoretical chance to reach nine wins this season, allowing them some leeway to lose a match or two. CSK’s history offers some optimism, especially recalling their title-winning 2010 season. That year, they began with a 2-5 record but won three consecutive home matches, leveling their record at 5-5.
However, CSK’s heavy reliance on seasoned players has backfired dramatically, placing the five-time champions in one of their most challenging phases in IPL history. As T20 cricket continues to evolve, Chennai now faces the risk of falling behind the competition.
Other teams are effectively managing this shift. Players like Vipraj Nigam, Digvesh Rathi, and Priyansh Arya appear to be emerging stars who could have boosted CSK. However, Chennai Super Kings seems outdated and is at risk of being left behind.
CSK’s next match is against LSG on 14th April at Lucknow who are in red hot form. The LSG side thumped GT and now CSK will have to play out of their skin to get back to winning ways before it’s too late. CSK are placed at bottom of points table with 1 win from 6 matches with a NRR of -1.554 and LSG at 4th position with 4 wins from 6 matches & a NRR of +0.162.
