South Africa’s premier red-ball bowler Kagiso Rabada has been sidelined by a hamstring injury, leaving his availability for the crucial Test series against Australia uncertain. South Africa have suffered a major blow ahead of their home summer, with Kagiso Rabada ruled out of the three-match ODI series against Australia. The series is scheduled from September 24 to 30, with the first Test between the two sides beginning on October 9.
Kagiso Rabada sidelined for ODI Series
Kagiso Rabada suffered a right hamstring injury around ten days ago and will be unavailable for at least the next four-and-a-half weeks. That leaves him with less than six weeks to recover before the Test series begins. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has not revealed the exact grade or severity of the injury, but confirmed that Rabada has already started his rehabilitation under medical supervision.
“Kagiso Rabada is currently progressing through the early stages of his rehabilitation from a right hamstring injury under the close supervision of the Cricket South Africa medical team,” said CSA in a statement
Test Availability Still Uncertain
While Kagiso Rabada’s absence from the ODI series has been confirmed, South Africa have not ruled him out of the Tests. CSA stressed that his selection will depend entirely on how his rehabilitation progresses.
“Kagiso Rabada’s availability for the three-match Test series against Australia will depend on how he progresses through his rehabilitation, with a decision on his selection to be made closer to the series,” added CSA.
The uncertainty comes at a particularly important time for South Africa. The three-Test series against Australia is not just another home assignment—it could have significant implications for their ambitions in the World Test Championship. Kagiso Rabada remains one of the most important pieces of their red-ball attack, making his recovery timeline a major talking point.
A Key Player for South Africa
The timing of the injury is especially concerning because of Kagiso Rabada’s importance in big Test matches. Rabada’s nine wickets in the 2025 World Test Championship final against Australia played a crucial role in South Africa’s historic triumph. Rabada’s ability to generate pace, movement and sustained pressure makes him the leader of the Proteas’ bowling attack.
South Africa will therefore be hoping that Rabada can return at some point during the Test series, even if he is unable to make the first Test. Reports in South Africa had raised concerns that Rabada could potentially miss the entire series because of a more serious hamstring tear. However, CSA have not confirmed those reports and continue to assess the fast bowler’s condition.
South Africa Have Pace Options
Despite the uncertainty surrounding their premier quick, South Africa are not short of fast-bowling options. Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch are expected to carry much of the responsibility, while Kwena Maphaka, Dane Paterson and Wiaan Mulder provide additional options.
There could also be a route back into the Test side for Anrich Nortje. Although Nortje is no longer centrally contracted and has not played Test cricket since March 2023, he remains a potential option if South Africa require additional experience in their pace attack. Gerald Coetzee, meanwhile, could also enter the conversation after featuring for South Africa A against Bangladesh A.
The Race Against Time
For now, South Africa’s priority is simple: get Kagiso Rabada fit without rushing his recovery. The Proteas have already shown they can win major Test matches without him, including their series victory in India after Rabada missed that assignment with a rib injury.
Replacing a bowler of Kagiso Rabada’s quality against Austral/ia would still be a significant challenge. With the first Test only weeks away, Rabada’s rehabilitation has become one of the biggest storylines of South Africa’s upcoming home season.
