AUS vs SA: 3 Reasons For Australia’s Shocking Defeat In 2nd T20I

Australia crashed to a surprising 53-run defeat at the hands of South Africa at Darwin as the Proteas hit back from disappointment in previous game to level the series 1-1. While, South Africa made a statement and showed they are here to compete, Australia have just been given a wake-up call and areas to improve as well with their 9-match winning streak coming to an end. Here, we will try and list out three reasons why Australia went down to South Africa.

Dropped Catch of Dewald Brevis Hurts Australia

Dewald Brevis played like a man on a mission as he looked unstoppable in the middle. He walked in at Number 4 and stayed unbeaten till the end as Australian bowlers could not stop him at all. But Australia had a chance, when Brevis was batting on 56*. He was dropped by substitute fielder Matthew Kuhnemann. He went onto make 69 more runs and was unbeaten on 125 when the innings closed.

The victory margin for South Africa was 53 runs. Not only the runs, Brevis managed to put up partnerships with South Africa’s lower and middle order which propelled the score to beyond 200 and close to 220. It meant the batters had their task cut out and they couldn’t chase the target down. If the catch was taken, South Africa would have been kept down to under 200 and things would have been different.

As old cliche goes, catches win matches and dropped catch of Brevis hurt Australia badly much like David’s dropped catch in the last game hurt South Africa in game 1. Australia pride on their fielding and must sort this issue out ahead of the next game. Fielding is under control and these errors can be costly in big games. But Brevis was the game-changer in the end.

Failure of Travis Head & Glenn Maxwell A Concern for Australia

Travis Head hasn’t had a good series so far, as he has failed in the first two games. He scored 2 in the first game and in the chase yesterday, he managed only 5 runs. Travis Head is a key player for Australia and Mitchell Marsh has already mentioned that he will be opening with Head in the T20 World Cup 2026. Yes, Head needs time as he is coming back after a break. But the conditions on offer are good batting conditions and Head must fire to make things easier for everyone.

We know what Travis Head is capable of as on his day he can take the game away from any opposition. But lately, he has been off form and after resting the West Indies series, it was expected that he will hit the ground running, but is yet to do justice to his talent. If Head starts firing, then Australia looks a completely different team.

Then, there is the curious case of Glenn Maxwell. While Maxwell has done a decent job with ball as spin bowling all-rounder, he is yet to contribute significantly with the bat. He scored 16 off 10 balls where it was expected he would step up. But he has become unreliable to say the least with bat in hand and may win one out of 10 games. Yes, he will be backed for T20 World Cup 2026, because of his bowling and fielding which is top class, but Maxwell the batter needs to come to the party more often than not.

Both Head and Maxwell will want to come to the party and be back in form for the third match of the series. As we know, if these two click and the kind of line-up Australia has, it can beat anybody on their day. But these not clicking has made the job a little difficult for others.

Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa having off-days hurts Australia

Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa both had off-days with the ball and as senior bowlers, they couldn’t afford to have such days. Yes, Dewald Brevis was on song and all bowlers barring Dwarshuis was taken to the cleaners, but as senior bowlers, it was expected that Hazlewood and Zampa will weather the storm and find a way to deal with the situation, but it was not to be.

Josh Hazlewood had the most expensive figures in his T20 International career as he gave away 56 runs in his 4 overs and picked up only one wicket. While Adam Zampa picked up one wicket but gave away 46 runs in his 4 overs. Both are dependable bowlers for Australia and one expected them to control their economy, but it was not to be. The only other option if economy was not controlled was taking wickets, but neither managed to get a bunch of wickets. It was an off-day for the Australian bowlers and for these senior pros as well.

Going ahead, Australia will be hoping both Zampa and Hazlewood roar back and bounce back like they do in the third match. If both these bowlers are back to their best in the third game in Cairns, then it will be difficult to beat Australia as they become a formidable team when everyone is clicking. Zampa and Hazlewood are not major concerns looking ahead as they have been in decent form lately, it’s just that they need to pick up form in the third game.
