Shreyas Iyer led PBKS to their second IPL final after 11 years. MI’s unbeaten streak in defending 200-plus totals has been broken. PBKS and RCB will face off in the finals on June 3rd. One of them will end their 18-year-long wait for the trophy.
MI’s unbeaten streak breached
Before this match, MI had never lost a game after scoring 200-plus in the first innings. They had a 100% winning rate in defending 200-plus totals by 18 wins in 18 matches. They failed to defend it for the first time yesterday. PBKS became the first team to chase 200-plus against MI.
PBKS also became only the third team, after RCB and GT, to beat MI in Qualifier 2. RCB did it in 2011, and GT did it in 2023. Ironically, both of them lost in the finals that year. Hope, PBKS changes that record this year.
This is Hardik Pandya’s third defeat as a captain in the playoffs. Shreyas Iyer became the second captain after MS Dhoni to beat Hardik Pandya in the playoffs. Dhoni has done it twice in 2023 (Qualifier 1 and Finals ), when Hardik was leading GT.
This is the first time Hardik Pandya, as a captain, failed to defend a 200-plus total. He remained successful in 8 matches before. Failed to defend it in the 9th attempt.
Shreyas Iyer’s consistency
Since 2022, Shreyas Iyer, as a captain, has never lost two consecutive matches in the IPL. He had maintained this streak for 34 matches. He missed the whole 2023 season due to an injury. He played a crucial captain’s knock of an unbeaten 87 runs from 41 balls to secure his victory against MI in the Qualifier 2.
Shreyas Iyer’s knock of 87 runs is the second-highest score by a captain in the Playoffs. David Warner’s 93* against GL in 2016 remains at the top. He is also the second captain after David Warner and the first Indian captain to win the Man of the Match award in Qualifier 2.
SKY is the limit
Suryakumar Yadav scored 44 runs off 26 balls yesterday. He has crossed 25 runs in all the 16 matches of MI this season. Due to his consistence performance he has scored 717 runs in this season. He is the first batter from MI to cross 700 runs in a season.
This is the 12th time a player has crossed 700 runs in season. Surya became the 10th batter to achieve this feat. Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle are the only players to cross this milestone in two seasons. Surya became the first non-opener to cross 700 runs in a season.
