Former Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik believes that senior players of the team must be responsible for the Test series loss at home against New Zealand. He also remarked that they will have no issue in admitting their guilt.
New Zealand ended India’s 12 years long unbeaten streak at home by winning the second Test in Pune. After 18 series, India faced a series loss at home. Before securing series in Pune, the Blackcaps thumped India by eight wickets in Bengaluru.
Loss was a consequence of senior players not putting their hands up: Dinesh Karthik
In a recent his recent chat with Cricbuzz, he spoke about the poor performance of Team India in the second Test match of the series at M. Chinnasamy Stadium in Bengaluru. He also went to point out the failure of senior players has cost us the series.
“Yeah. Why shouldn’t the onus of the series loss be the senior players? They will look at themselves and say, ‘What could we have done better?’ I don’t think they have run away from it,” he said.
“If you can celebrate the highs and the fans enjoy how important they are, when the team wins, then when the losses happen, and the brick bats are thrown at you, I think they will have the courage to face it,” former India stumper added.
They were not at their best in the series- Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik also discussed about the responsiblity of the senior players in the team. He feels that it is good to have players like Virat, Rohit, Ashwin, Jadeja and Bumrah in the dressing room at the same time, but without their performance we cannot win matches.
“If you go and ask each one of them personally, what they think of the series, I don’t think they will have great things to say about how the whole team played, and it is only but fair to ask them questions about what can be done better for future of Test cricket in India and for Indian Test cricket,” he stated.
“So, knowing them personally, and I do know each one of them personally. They will say that they didn’t have the best series. The question then becomes what do they need to do to get better and it is a very, very current question to ask,” in the same interaction he added.
India failed to chase the target of 359 by 113 runs in the second Test in Bengaluru on Day 3. In the response of 359, India were bowled out for 245 as Mitchell Santner picked up 13 wickets in the match and rewarded as ‘Man of the Match’.
With one more Test to go in the series, India will be looking for a strong comeback in the series to at least secure some points for World Test Championship final, that is scheduled happen in England next year. India will also travel to Australia to defend Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 but this will not going to easy as it seems. We will have a great Test season ahead as a cricket fan.
