Shubman Gill became the first captain in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to be replaced as an impact substitute when the Gujarat Titans skipper left the field during the innings break against Rajasthan Royals at the Sawai Mansingh stadium on Monday. However, he was replaced by veteran pacer Ishant Sharma during the second innings of the match. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan led Gujarat Titans in the absence of Gill.
Before Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Sanju Samson have been used as impact substitutes by Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals respectively, but they weren’t playing ad designated captains in those games. However, Shubman Gill’s night was spoilt by a 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi who became the youngest to score an IPL hundred. He also became the youngest to score a T20 hundred in the world at 14 years and 32 days.

Shubman Gill revealed the painful reason why he didnt came to field vs RR in IPL 2025
Shubman Gill revealed the reason why he did not come out to field as Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) by eight wickets in their 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Monday. Rashid Khan took over the reign of the side as stand-in skipper and oversaw Vaibhav Suryavanshi break multiple records to help RR beat GT.
At the post-match presentation, when Gill was asked about him missing the second innings, he said:
“Felt a little back spasm in my back and we have a game couple of days after this, so the physio didn’t want to take any chance.”
Shubman Gill smacked four sixes and five fours to make 84 off 50 balls and added 93 runs for the opening wicket with Sai Sudharsan to set up a strong base. Jos Buttler was severe on his former franchise, clobbering four sixes and three fours to make 50 not out off 26 balls to take Gujarat Titans to a formidable total of 209/4 from their 20 overs.
The Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill received medical advice to sit out of the second half match against Rajasthan Royals on Monday night following a brief back spasm during his team’s batting performance at Jaipur. Ishant Sharma entered the match as an Impact Player when GT substituted Gill due to his back spasm while Rashid Khan handled captaincy responsibilities. The medical staff at GT prevented Gill from playing by suggesting caution because they needed time to prepare for their upcoming match.
GT Director Vikram Solanki Confirms Shubman Gill’s Return On The Cards Amid Injury Concerns in IPL 2025
The GT captain Shubman Gill might play against SRH even though he developed back problems during the previous match. Shubman Gill failed to participate in the GT’s Rajasthan Royals match on April 28th because of a back spasm. At the press conference before the match Gujarat Titans director Vikram Solanki confirmed that Shubman Gill’s participation against SRH was possible after being removed from the countryside against Rajasthan Royals due to precautionary reasons.
“His fitness, there was a bit of a back spasm. We’re just trying to be careful with it. He’ll be at training today. We’ll just see where he’s at. We’re reasonably confident that he’s going to be OK,” said Solanki on the eve of GT’s game against SRH here.
Solanki insisted that Suryavanshi’s bruising 35-ball 100 has not heaped any extra pressure on his side.
“Firstly, I don’t think the team has been decimated or anything of the sort. We mustn’t take any credit away from that young man. He played quite brilliantly,” he said.
The GT will come across another heavy artillery batting line-up against SRH, though batters such as Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen have been quite underwhelming this season.
“We must pay the due respect that SRH deserves. They are a very strong team. We will be conscious of the threat that they have. They’ve got match winners across their team,” he said.
SRH faces a formidable opponent in Gujarat Titans (GT), who are currently fourth with six wins in nine games. GT, however, are also coming off a loss — an eight-wicket defeat to Rajasthan Royals — and will look to bounce back at home
