Asia Cup 2025 : “I Feel A Few Things Are Ahead Of Sportsmanship”- Suryakumar Yadav Opens Up On No-Shake Hand Decision

Suryakumar Yadav‘s handshake snub set the tone, his bold statements amplified it, and Pakistan’s decision to skip the post-match ceremony underlined just how deeply they were stung. India’s commanding display, coupled with their skipper Suryakumar Yadav‘s defiance, delivered a double blow to Pakistan.

Don’t mix politics and sport, they say. Yet an India-Pakistan cricket match has always carried undertones of the two nations’ fraught relationship, with bilateral tensions often spilling onto the field. On Sunday in Dubai, during the Asia Cup fixture, the shadow of strained ties in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack was clearly visible.

Indian cricketers are not known for being outspoken, usually limiting themselves to occasional posts on social media, albeit rarely on sensitive issues. However, on Sunday, Suryakumar Yadav and his men made significant calls that translated into powerful messages against the backdrop of a tense political climate.

Suryakumar Yadav led from the front in what was arguably the most important match of his captaincy career, guiding India to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025. The captain Suryakumar Yadav rose to every challenge that came his way, making bold, game-changing on-field decisions, rotating his bowlers astutely, and getting the field placements spot on.

Later, he also broke his poor run against the arch-rivals, anchoring the chase with a match-winning unbeaten 47 off 37 balls to take India past the target of 128. It was a truly all-round performance from the India skipper, delivered on his birthday, and one of the most significant victories of his career in light of recent tensions between the two countries.

Yet while he carried out his duties on the field with near-perfection, it was Suryakumar’s actions and words that captured the headlines. Ahead of the tournament, the India captain had already stated that his side would not tone down their aggression in the high-voltage clash.

“Aggression is always there on the field. Without aggression, you cannot play the sport. I am very excited to take the field from tomorrow,” Suryakumar Yadav said during the captain’s press conference ahead of the Asia Cup.

On match day, Suryakumar Yadav’s aggression was not excessive but conveyed subtly through his actions. Playing against the arch-rivals, amid nationwide calls for a boycott of the fixture, the India captain made his stance clear by choosing not to shake hands with Pakistan skipper Salman Agha.

It was a rare sight in cricket, with the customary handshake between the two captains skipped before the toss. Unwavering in his decision, Suryakumar Yadav went about his pre-match responsibilities without exchanging pleasantries with his counterpart.

Once the game began, India stamped their authority from the very first legal delivery, with the Pakistani batting line-up crumbling against a relentless bowling attack. In the second innings, Suryakumar Yadav led from the front with the bat, steering his side home with a match-winning knock.

After sealing the victory by dispatching Sufiyan Muqeem for a towering six, the Indian captain walked calmly towards the dressing room, once again avoiding handshakes with the entire Pakistan team. Even as the Pakistan players waited along the boundary rope expecting the customary post-match gesture, Suryakumar Yadav and his batting partner Shivam Dube chose to head straight back, ignoring them.

Suryakumar later dedicated the victory to the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack and to the Indian armed forces. When asked about his actions at the post-match press conference, he defended his decision, insisting that certain matters in life transcend sportsmanship.

“Our government and BCCI, we were aligned together. The rest, we came here, we took a call. I feel we came here just to play the game. I think we gave them a proper reply. Few things in life are ahead of sportsman spirit. We stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and we stand with their families. As I said, we dedicate this win to our brave armed forces who took part in Operation Sindoor,” said the India captain.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav finished the match against Pakistan with a six and walked off right away with Shivam Dube without shaking hands with the Pakistan players. In the press conference, Surya explained in detail the gesture.

Suryakumar Yadav after the match vs Pak in Asia Cup 2025 opened upon the “no handshake controversy” issue

India thrashed Pakistan by seven wickets in the ongoing Asia Cup on Sunday. However, the Indian players not shaking hands with the Pakistan players after the match hogged the limelight. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube walked off from the ground after winning the match without shaking hands with any of the opposition players.

The India skipper attended the press conference after the match and explained the ‘no handshake’ gesture, stating that the team stands with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. He also brushed away the sportsmanship factor while responding to the question.

“I feel a few things are ahead of sportsmanship. We stand with the families of Pahalgam. And also the brave armed forces during Operation Sindoor.

“We took a call as we came here to only play. We gave a proper reply. We are aligned with the BCCI and the government,” Surya said.

Suryakumar Yadav, the birthday boy, also won hearts by dedicating India’s win over Pakistan to the country’s brave armed forces.

“Just wanted to say something. Perfect occasion, taking the time out, we stand by the families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. We express our solidarity. Want to dedicate the win to all our armed forces who showed a lot of bravery. Hope they continue to inspire us all and we give them more reasons on the ground whenever we get an opportunity to make them smile,” Surya said in the post-match presentation.

As he emphasised in the post-match presentation ceremony, India captain Suryakumar Yadav dedicated India’s seven-wicket win “to our brave armed forces who took part in Operation Sindoor.”

In an emotional tone, he reflected on the decision to not shake hands with Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha:

“I feel few things, few things in life are ahead of sportsmen’s spirit also.” He then paused and explained:

“I have already answered it. I have told it at the presentation as well that we actually stand with all the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack. And we stand with their families also, expressing our solidarity. Also, as I said at PC, that we dedicate this win to our brave armed forces who took part in Operation Sindoor. And as they continue to inspire us all, we will try our best whenever given an opportunity to inspire them as well, if possible,” he said.

This was the second time he was asked about the handshake in the press conference. On the first instance, he revealed the genesis of the decision.

“I think the BCCI and our government were aligned. We came here, we took a call and we came here just to play the game. And we gave them the proper reply.”

The next probing came much later. The media manager intervened, but Surya told him not to and patiently explained. A related question was posed on whether sport should stay clear of politics. He said, saying that he has told his teammates to cut off at least 75 percent of social media usage:

“Not just India-Pakistan. So I feel this is a good rivalry. And I don’t know what you are saying about politics. Because I am completely off social media. I have deleted everything from my phone. So whatever it is, others watch it and the voice gets cut there.”

He then said people follow the other rivalries in the game too.

“People like to watch games between England and Australia, or Australia versus South Africa.”

Suryakumar Yadav’s stand had a significant impact on the Pakistan camp, who felt disrespected by the Indian captain’s conduct. In recent years, India–Pakistan encounters had largely been free of controversy, but the latest escalation between the two nations has ensured that future fixtures are unlikely to lack drama.

India rubbed salt into Pakistan’s wounds by refusing both the pre and post-match courtesies, leaving their rivals humiliated after a crushing defeat. All eyes will now be on their next potential clash in the Super 4 stage on 21 September, again in Dubai, where tensions are bound to resurface.
