With Zimbabwe and Botswana’s match officially over, this was a very one-sided affair that was completely dominated by one side. Seeing that the Chevrons were able to pull away by over 160 runs, they are now 2-0 in group stage play, while continuing to prove why they are the strongest side in these African qualifiers.
Looking at a well-oiled side that is hoping to make the World Cup once again after having a rare miss in 2024, they are very close to making it and just a couple of matches away with a high net run-rate. Captain Sikandar Raza has done a fantastic job of making this side look extremely strong and showing what it takes to win these big matches.
Meanwhile, Botswana will have a lot of thinking to do in order to see if they can even qualify for the next round. A side that has found themselves under a lot of pressure, all the hype that was built up for them prior to this tournament has now evaporated and no longer been prevalent.
With them not looking strong on either side of the game, and being completely outclassed in every departments, things will need to change fast, or it could become an even bigger problem for them after these qualifiers. Their leader in Karabo Mothlanka, has done a solid job in leading this unit, but still has a ton of room for improvement to help them come out of pressure situations.
Zimbabwe: First Innings Was Full Of Fire-Power And Strength That Helped This Side Gain Control
As Zimbabwe decided to bat first, their side was able to really show off great ability and score a huge total due to having vital experience. Opening was Brian Bennett once again, as he created an early 29-run partnership with Tadiwanashe Marumani, before Marumani ended up getting out for 10 after hitting two wonderful-looking fours.
Looking at Bennett, who kept going on, he created a 112-run combination with another star batsman in Brendan Taylor, while hitting a 65-run knock in just 33 deliveries. Someone who mixed up his powerful four sixes with a great touch on the back foot that allowed him to hit seven fours, he nearly went for a strike rate of 200 up top.
Meanwhile, Taylor had a historic 123-run knock as he was showing great class and a glimpse of his own self once again. Despite not having had the greatest of forms in T20I cricket lately due to a lack of playing over the past couple years, he finally was able to make up for it by hitting 16 fours, while adding 5 massive blows that showed he still had a ton of power left in him.
Since Sikandar Raza was batting with him after Bennett got out, they created 49 runs together, with Raza having 21 on 10 balls before being caught at 180/3. Seeing that Taylor took them all the way to 232/3, he managed to leave because of being retired hurt, and Ryan Burl, plus Tashinga Musekiwa, added vital runs towards the end to reach 259/5.
Botswana: Bowlers Got Hammered Pretty Badly In Every Way During The Match
Looking at Botswana’s bowling attack, they didn’t look in form at all and were getting brutally dismantled throughout this match. With right-handed pacer Tharindu Perera getting no swing on his action, he ended up giving up 57 runs during just four overs, while only picking up one wicket to so for it.
Someone who had shown consistent prowess in that department entering this match, it didn’t become a key aspect of the game for him, and even Boemo Kgosiemang looked beaten up during his four. Allowing over 50 runs as well, he did pick up two wickets, but it was done when all the damage had already been done, while also having an economy of over 12.
Katlo Piet was struggling to get any success on his in-swingers today, as he only got three overs because of how much the top-order batsmen had hammered him today. Although he usually goes for four overs every match, he was held short today because of an economy near 17, while providing no wicket-taking threat at all.
With Thatayaone Tshose really having a hard time of finding the middle areas of the stumps, he was not a key factor in this match at all and gave up almost 12 an over, with a few in which he seemed to have a hard time of getting out of. Closing it out, although Dhruv Maisuria was more efficent than the rest of these pieces, it was clear that he couldn’t single-handedly carry them with 1/31 figures during four overs.
Botswana: An Extremely Slow Innings Didn’t Help This Side Even Reach Over 100 Runs
For Botswana, today was a tough they for their batsmen as they couldn’t provide any scoring threat at all and seemed very stagnant. Losing Karabo Modise on the first ball of this match, it had already put them in trouble since their dangerous opener could no longer create any threat up the order.
With Karabo Mothlanka having lost his wicket for one right after that, he was not looking dangerous at all today, and kept this side in tremendous stress at 8/2 with Vinoo Balakrishnan still out there. Losing him on the very next ball ended up being an even bigger problem, and they were stranded at 8/3 with 1/2 of the powerplay not even completed at that moment.
As Reginald Nehonde and Monroux Kasselman tried to create a partnership that would give this Botswana side some more comfort heading into the middle overs, they scored a combined 27 runs before Nehonde got trapped in a LBW for 6. Their 2nd biggest duo was between Kasselman and Tharindu Perera, as they were able to get up to a much more respectable 60/4 score than what they initially started at.
Losing Monroux Kasselman for 26 due to a clean-bowled broke that partnership, while Perera kept on going throughout his innings and was able to finish with 31 on 32 deliveries. Despite him continuously going and helping Botswana reach 89/8, other batsmen like Katlo Piet, plus Thatayaone Tshose, were removed.
Zimbabwe: Experienced Attack Shows Their Prowess Once Again
Seeing Zimbabwe, their bowlers really showed up in an incredible way and made a huge difference for this side once again. With Richard Ngarava having taken two wickets and allowing just 10 runs in his two overs, he kept his economy at a modest 5 runs an over while consistently hitting the right mark.
Known for hitting the same line and length continuously, Blessing Muzarabani was also there as a key bouncer threat who took one wicket and allowed just 9 in three overs. Seeing that the right-handed Tinotenda Maposa was also very economical today, it showed that everyone was on point, because even spinner Ryan Burl was able to just allow 14 during his full quota. Lastly, Sikandar Raza was once again brilliant with two maidens, while having an economy that was around 3.50.
