ICC Africa T20 WC Qualifiers: Can Botswana Finally Make A Run After Showing Potential?

As Botswana enters this T20I qualifier as one of the sides that have slowly continued to make improvements, this tournament will be a big test for them after failing to make the regional final last time out in 2024. Ever since Botswana‘s re-emergence as a major associate nation in 2017, this group has created some massive upsets, including a 3-wicket victory against Nigeria, recently, and also looked like a top-notch squad during their qualifier C matches, which they lost once.

A side that will shortly gain chances to play the ODI format of cricket after their recent success, making a T20 World Cup could mean everything for their country and give the nation a huge cricket following, with it already rapidly growing.

Showing potential to already go past teams like Cameroon and Sierra Leone, which were just very close to making the big stage a couple years back, it will be very interesting to see if this team could reach a whole new level. Stanley Timoni, who has been mentioned as a vital piece that’s changed Botswana cricket for the better, he continues making strides towards excellence after being hired back in 2023 when this side no longer could keep Joseph Angara.

Although they may not seem like the most flashy team or one with many big names, captain Karabo Motlhanka has shown to be a tremendous leader and really helped his side improve their style of play after playing for a domestic side in England.

Strengths: Batsmen Should Really Provide Plentiful Runs For This Unit

Looking at this side, one thing Botswana possesses that will help them is experienced batsmen who have remained consistent in their various matches. One name to point out is Karabo Mothlanka, 28.63 average in T20Is, as he has also been able to smash 8 half-centuries in key situations. Someone who likes to play more clinical shots rather than always rushing to hit big, it has been a key aspect from that opening position.

Opposite Karabo Mothlanka, Vinoo Balakrishnan also provides a ton of experience and can hit the power shots well, as he’s run up to two centuries already in 39 innings played. As someone who started his career in 2019, this has been a great fit for the right-hander who can complement Mothlanka’s game with ease.

Having experience in Reginald Nehonde, 825 runs, will give them someone who has played against bigger nations before, and even, in fact, was associated with the Zimbabwe under-19 side before joining Botswana’s team. Although his strike rates tend to be below 100, whenever he needs to, Nehonde can wreak carnage with boundaries on many opposing pacers plus spinners.

Looking at Tharindu Perera, who comes from a Sri Lankan cricketing background, he has always been key down the order with a 23.61 average and over 60 fours plus sixes hit so far during his career. Lastly, Miachel Badenhorst looks like someone who can also score at a high rate during death overs.

Weaknesses: No Clear Bowling Attack Against Top Teams

For Botswana, their major problem will be the bowlers since they haven’t had a true wicket-taker on this side yet that they know for sure will take at least one each match. Leading pacer Boemo Kgosiemang, 9 wickets during 15 matches, hasn’t shown much strength yet since he’s gone over an 8 economy and seems to get tensed up when playing higher-level batsmen.

Not able to get that consistent pace or bounce, Boemo Kumalo has been similar since he’s only been able to remove 16 batsmen during 27 matches, while not creating any type of tension. Someone who tries to aim it right down the middle, sometimes it swings a little to inside or out, and it can be easier for opponents to cut for boundaries behind slips.

Another player who nearly goes for an 8 economy, he has struggled against players below his competition level, as well at this current moment. Michael Badenhorst hasn’t provided that much fire either since he’s only really had one strong bowling performance so far and doesn’t get called upon much during key overs. With this being a major issue, it will really be important for them to find another consistent option outside of Mmoloki Mootkesi and Katlo Piet, since they take up less than 50% of overs.

It will be very interesting to see if they will let players like Reginald Nehonde and more have a bigger role in the bowling department, since they have done well at bigger stages before.

Opportunities: Matches Against Tanzania and Uganda Could Help Them Find Form

One vital opportunity that Botswana has during these qualifiers is finding out its clutch players who can make a difference later on, depending on how they perform against tight matches like Tanzania plus Uganda. As Uganda had just made the most recent T20I WC, bowlers like Mmoloki Mootkesi, 58 wickets in 51 matches, will learn what it takes to face batsmen who have played at the highest stages before.

Mmoloki Mootkesi, who had 2/25 figures against them recently in December, he will look for more improvement and motivate other pieces on this bowling attack to get better. As the previously mentioned Boemo Kgosiemang has struggled to start his career, there is an opportunity for him to come from the other end plus really make a difference in these matches.

Knowing that Boemo Kumalo is at a similar rate, he has already shown some proficiency against batting lineups like Tanzania and should start emerging as a key wicket-taker. With batting already mostly in place for Botswana, they should continue delivering big knocks against Tanzania, plus Uganda’s bowling attacks, who have had issues of their own.

Given that Botswana will play these two sides a couple of times, it should really help them get a chance to put points on the board and finally make noise. As these two teams will give a fight in their own way, if Botswana can start off strong in each match, these two sides potentially give them an opportunity to win four matches.

Threats: Zimbabwe Will Be Far And Away Their Strongest Opponents

As much as Tanzania and Uganda may be winnable for this Botswana side, their biggest problems will occur against one team that is a full-time member plus created some of the biggest upsets in cricket history. With them being Zimbabwe, this could very likely be two losses for Botswana since they don’t possess that similar experience and much of a veteran threat to upset a massive team.

Although crazier things have happened before, the Chevrons are way too motivated and will not be risking any type of loss against a newer side. With that being said, alongside their weaker bowling lineup, it could be an issue for this side early, since every other match becomes must-win.

Bostwana Squad for Qualifiers: Karabo Mothlanka(C), Reginald Nehonde, Vinoo Balakrishnan, Thatayaone Tshose, Tharindu Perera, Losika Makgale, Boemo Khumalo, Boemo Kgosiemang, Bothle Keganne, Jack Richards, Monroux Kasselman, Karabo Modise, Dhruv Maisuria, Abednico Motshegetsi, Katlo Piet
