Ajinkya Rahane recently made a joke about how media, not the franchise club management, might be the first to inform him that the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captaincy position has been filled. After Shreyas Iyer left before the big auction, the former captain of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) is strongly linked to the aforementioned position.

Ajinkya Rahane has led his team to nine victories in 25 IPL games while serving as captain. He is currently the captain of the Mumbai state squad and is regarded as a reputable leader who has successfully led India in the past. Last year, he led the domestic powerhouses to the Ranji Trophy. They defeated Haryana and advanced to the semi-finals thanks to the experienced batter’s strong leadership.

Rahane’s recent white-ball success is also working in his favor. During Mumbai’s triumphant Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament campaign in late 2024, he was the team’s top scorer. For a base salary of INR 1.50 crore, KKR signed him to a second contract with the team.

Ajinkya Rahane Jokes About KKR’s Captaincy

Ajinkya Rahane explained that no discussions on the captaincy had taken place with the franchise. He joked that if he is offered the position, he anticipates hearing from the journalists.

“There has been no discussion regarding this so far. If they make the decision, I’m pretty sure you guys will get to know about it before me. You guys will only inform me, call me, and congratulate me,” Rahane said during the post-match press conference

At the very location where Ajinkya Rahane will play his home games in the IPL 2025 with KKR, he appropriately scored a ton in the second innings of the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal. At the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, he helped Mumbai extend their lead in the second innings with 108 runs off 180 deliveries.

Ajinkya Rahane On BCCI’s New Guidelines

Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Mumbai, has recently had to oversee a number of elite players. Following the BCCI’s most recent guidelines, players including Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Rohit Sharma, and Yashasvi Jaiswal all showed up to participate in the Ranji Trophy. When not participating in international assignments, players must play domestic cricket in accordance with the new rules.

“BCCI have been trying to encourage players to participate in domestic cricket for the last 2-3 years now. I think it is a good move, because when experienced players return to play, then the rest of the team members get to learn a lot,” said Rahane.

Mumbai will travel to play Vidarbha in the Ranji Trophy semi-finals. The conflict is expected to start on February 17.
