The cricket community was recently taken aback by Ravichandran Ashwin’s sudden retirement during the BorderGavaskar Trophy in Australia. Despite missing the first Test in Perth, Ashwin played in the second day-night Test but was left out of the third match. Soon after the Brisbane Test concluded in a draw, Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket in the post-match presser, stunning everyone by surprise.

A brilliant career spanning over ten years was spun by Ravichandran Ashwin. The 38-year-old off-spinner, who made his debut for his country in 2011, announced his retirement following the third Test match in Brisbane on December 18. Ashwin’s term has been exceptional. It’s never easy to follow in the footsteps of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, but the Chennai-based spinner established a unique style.

Even though he was never the team’s fittest player, he continued to train and had enough stamina to bowl on the fifth day of a Test. Additionally, Ashwin accepted that he would not be India’s first-choice spinner when the country traveled abroad. At home, however, he essentially turned India into a stronghold that foreign teams could not penetrate. The good news for Ashwin’s supporters is that he will still play in the Indian Premier League.

“Ravichandran Ashwin Was Humiliated” – Manoj Tiwari

As Ashwin’s retirement garnered media attention, there were rumours that the 38-year-old had retired following “humiliation in the dressing room.” Former cricket player for India also feels that the team administration has handled the Ashwin retirement issue poorly and that the veteran was in fact humiliated.

“I see Ravichandran Ashwin was insulted. See players like Washington Sundar and Tanush Kotian. They are all quality spinners and performed well in first-class cricket,” Tiwary told news agency PTI.

“But when you have a player of Ashwin’s calibre, what is the need for you to bring in Washington in the home series where Ashwin is there, Jadeja is there, and Kuldeep is there, and make him bowl more overs than Ashwin. Is that not an insult to Ravichandran Ashwin?

“Will he just carry on, after giving so many match-winning performances? He will not come and say that because he is a nice guy. But one day he will definitely come out and he will share his experience. This is not the right process. They are also players, and they also need some patting on the back and dignity as well,” Tiwary said.

Ravichandran Ashwin finished seventh on the all-time list and second only to Anil Kumble (619) for his nation after taking 537 wickets at an average of 24.00 in his 106 Test matches.

In addition, he participated in 65 Twenty20 and 116 One-Day international matches. In his 2011 Test debut against the West Indies, Ashwin scored 3,503 runs with six hundreds and 14 fifties. He was also a good batsman. Additionally, he participated in 65 Twenty20 international matches and 116 One-Dayers.
