Newly-appointed England National Cricket Team Test vice-captain Harry Brook has shared his views on the Australia National Cricket Team skipper Pat Cummins reportedly missing the first Test of the Ashes 2025-26.This will be Harry Brook‘s second Ashes series but his first in Australia, where England has lost 13 of their last 15 Tests.
Despite a stellar away record with seven centuries in his first 11 overseas Tests, Harry Brook is aware of the challenges that lie ahead. Harry Brook’s experience in Australia is limited to a brief stint with Hobart Hurricanes as a 22-year-old and a cameo role in England’s T20 World Cup victory three years ago.
England cricketer Harry Brook has said that Australia’s Pat Cummins’s potential absence from the first Ashes Test could work in their favor.
The match is set to begin on November 21 in Perth. Despite Australia’s efforts to downplay the severity of his back injury, head coach Andrew McDonald admitted on Friday that time is running out for Cummins to be fit for the series opener.
Pat Cummins set to miss the Ashes series opener vs England
Australia coach Andrew McDonald has provided an update on the fitness of skipper Pat Cummins ahead of the upcoming Ashes series against England. Cummins has been battling a back injury that has prevented him from bowling since July and the Australia skipper only returned to running earlier this month just weeks out from the first Test against England in Perth from November 21.
McDonald admitted time was running out for Cummins to prove his fitness ahead of the first Test, but the Australia coach is still holding hope the inspirational captain can feature should he make a return to the bowling crease at training within the next 10 days.
“Myself and Patty have spoken about that type of timeframe,” McDonald said.
“Or else you start to bring in other risk factors. A: You’re not skill ready or B: Soft tissue injuries then become a real risk.
“And if you were to do a soft tissue injury early in a series like the Ashes, then it’s a long way back from where he’s been. So we’ll be mindful of all those risk factors.”
If Cummins is ruled out of the series opener in Perth it could pave the way for former skipper Steve Smith to captain the side, while back-up quick Scott Boland would seem the most logical replacement for the fast bowler alongside regulars Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. But McDonald is not giving up hope his skipper will be there to lead Australia, revealing Cummins’ prognosis had actually improved in recent times
“There’s some positive signs speaking to Patty over the last few days. He’s a lot more optimistic. Those who have been through this type of injury (say) these things ebb and flow,” McDonald noted.
“A couple of weeks ago, did he think he was a chance (to play in Perth) Potentially not, he was a little bit sore. Then you flip it forward two weeks and there’s a lot more positivity. We’ve still got a little bit to go.
“One of the benefits with Patty is that he has had the ability to prepare for Test matches off shortened preparations. So if it was to be shrunken down, we’d be very confident that he would still be able to perform in the first Test.
“But the reality is, we’re starting to get tight in terms of the times. We’re still optimistic, hopeful, but this time next week, I think we’ll be in a position to get better gauge on where he’s at.”
While Australia is toiling hard to get Pat Cummins fit before the Ashes, newly appointed Harry Brook expressed optimism that Pat Cummins absence would turn into advantage for England in the Ashes 2025-26.
Harry Brook English vice captain believes that Pat Cummins absence in Ashes 2025-26 would be advatageous to England
England’s newly appointed Test vice-captain Harry Brook will begin his tenure with the challenging Ashes series Down Under. The 26-year-old has had a stunning start to his Test career, scoring 2820 runs in 30 Tests at an average of 57.55. However, his biggest challenge awaits as the former World Test Champions will certainly have special plans in store for him.
Harry Brook, however, believes that England could have an advantage if Australian skipper Pat Cummins fails to get fit in time for the first Ashes Test, which starts on November 21, at the Perth Stadium. For the unversed, Cummins is dealing with a back injury, which has forced him to race against time ahead of the Perth Test. However, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald conceded on Friday that Cummins is “running out of time” before November 21.
While Brook believes that Australia have several world-class bowlers in their ranks, they will miss the combination of skill and leadership that Cummins offers.
“He is an amazing bowler and has been for many years. He bowls at high pace, with high skill. With him out of their side for the first game, from what we’ve seen, hopefully that plays into our hands… [But] we can’t take anybody lightly,” Brook said at Thursday night’s PCA awards ceremony, in partnership with Toyota.
Harry Brook was a part of the previous meeting between England and Australia in the Ashes. However, that series was played in the United Kingdom. Now, he is gearing up for a fresh challenge, facing Mitchell Starc and Co. on the Australian surfaces, which are known for its pace and bounce. The right-handed batter said that the five Tests against India earlier this year was the most intense series he has been a part of. He mentioned that he will be happy if the Ashes tops that.
“I don’t know what I’m stepping into. I know it’s a massive thing, but I’m still trying to get over that India series. That was awesome to be part of: to play 25 days out of 25 was mega. That was the most intense series I’ve ever been part of. If the Ashes tops that, I will be a very happy man,” Brook said.
“It is obviously intense. I can’t even remember much about the 2023 Ashes, if I’m honest. It’s a very similar group of players that we’ll come up against: a very strong bowling attack and on home soil they’ll present different challenges. I haven’t had too much experience of the pitches out there, so I have to stay in the moment as much as possible and play what’s in front of me,” he added.
Another hurdle for Brook in Australia is the chance of captaining a Test match for the first time, after being named Ben Stokes’s deputy.
He called it “an honor” but doesn’t expect to be called upon as he sees Stokes playing all five Tests. However, with Stokes not having played since injuring his shoulder while trying to bowl England to victory against India in Manchester, Harry Brook may have to step up as his deputy.
If Pat Cummins is unable to recover in time, Australia have backup options, including Scott Boland, who recently grabbed headlines with a hat-trick against West Indies. Still, the captain believes his experience will help him fast-track his return even if he misses some domestic games before the series.
The Ashes will kick off in Perth before moving to Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney through December and January. For Pat Cummins, the countdown has begun, and he remains determined not to miss a moment of Australia’s title defence.
