IND vs SA: Tristan Stubbs Magnificent Knock Outclasses India

Tristan Stubbs provided an eye-catching example of how to bat aggressively and properly on Day 4 of the South African tour of India, 2025. Mystic Baseball was using some great batting in the fourth inning to move the south after South Africa declared their innings; however, while the young man played with a combination of youth and controls in a manner that caused much frustration among the Indian bowlers, there was ample opportunity for him to learn to handle the pressure of a wicket that had some rotation due to the turn of the ball and a moist surface from previous rain.

Ultimately, at 180 deliveries, Stubbs was bowled out after scoring an incredible 94 runs — with the assistance of 9 fours and 1 six! Ultimately, Tristan Stubbs’ powerful batting was fundamental to South Africa’s second innings success and it has allowed South Africa to establish an incredibly challenging target to the home team.

Tristan Stubbs Scoring Areas

The basis for Stubbs’ 94 was formed on intent that was clearly positive and smart risk-taking. Stubbs was more than capable of tackling Indian spinners with positive effect; using the conventional as well as reverse sweep to not only rotate the strike but also to score boundaries.

The commentators remarked on his reverse sweep on several occasions; two of them being a FOUR hit off Kuldeep Yadav (51.5) and a FOUR hit off Washington Sundar (37.6), both of which highlight how comfortable Stubbs was with both the aerial route and finding gaps behind square.

The slog-sweep was just as productive for Stubbs as it produced a huge SIX off Ravindra Jadeja (78.1) before he eventually got out. When seamers such as Nitish Reddy pitched the ball short of a length, Stubbs was quick to place his weight on his back foot and hit consecutive boundaries through the gully and cover (75.5, 75.6). He was always using the crease, switching his bat to hit off his front foot or hitting the ball behind square in a manner that put the bowler under continued pressure to adjust their length or line to where Stubbs was positioning himself when hitting the ball.

When it came to the flighted deliveries, Stubbs consistently showed a stronger and more solid approach to defence than his aggressive approach; his demonstrating little in the way of panic or loss of composure or maturity.

Tristan Stubbs Vs Indian Bowlers

Despite looking for some spin and bounce from the wicket, Stubbs was able to dominate the March 17, 2023, matchup against Indian spinners, with each of the participating spinners being responsible for putting him under pressure. As India’s lead spinner, Ravindra Jadeja remained focused and determined to stop Stubbs from scoring during the majority of his innings and ultimately picked up the critical wicket of Stubbs. While Jadeja created multiple issues for Stubbs with his speed and accuracy, Stubbs used his feet effectively to hit Jadeja on numerous occasions and subsequently scored well off Jadeja using sweeps.

Similarly, part-time spinner Nitish Reddy had trouble with Stubbs and proved easy to attack, as Stubbs capitalized on opportunities to attack Reddy throughout the innings, including a number of boundaries in the 75th over. The high point of India’s bowling attack coincided with Jadeja taking the wicket of Stubbs. The end of the South African innings came right after Stubbs was bowled by Jadeja in the 78th over after being initially struck for six. Here, Jadeja bowled an off-stump delivery that was lofted above the attempted slog-sweep by Stubbs for the wicket of Stubbs.

Partnership

Stubbs’ contributions to the two partnerships that helped South Africa extend their lead were significant:

1) The partnership between Stubbs and T de Zorzi (101) was the first major innings to provide stability to South Africa’s innings on Day 4.

2) The partnership between Stubbs and P W A Mulder (82) further established Stubbs as a leader for the team’s lower-middle order. Stubbs pushed Mulder on to increase his scoring and accumulate a total score that could not be caught with only Days 5 and 6 remaining in the test match.

While Stubbs dismissal for 94 runs was a personal disappointment, it was his performance that put South Africa in a dominating position leading into what should be an exciting conclusion to the Test Match. His cerebral and aggressive style of play clearly enabled him to dominate and manipulate the field when faced with high-quality spin bowling, making it the best performance of the day.
