CSK vs DC: Problems Aplenty for CSK

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season unfolds, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) find themselves in unfamiliar territory. The once-invincible aura appears to be fading, replaced by a sense of urgency and tactical disarray as problems mount across multiple scenarios. After suffering three consecutive defeats to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Punjab Kings (PBKS), and Rajasthan Royals (RR), the franchise is currently anchored at the bottom of the points table, struggling to find both momentum and balance.
Led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, the team has been hit by a combination of inconsistent batting and ineffective bowling, further hampered by the absence of MS Dhoni. Dhoni has been sidelined for the first two weeks of the league due to a calf strain, leaving Gaikwad to navigate a bowling unit that has failed to defend totals and a top order struggling for rhythm.
With questions emerging around team composition, discipline, and on-field decision-making, the five-time champions are under immense pressure. As the opening week wraps up, these three consecutive losses necessitate an immediate turnaround to prevent their campaign from slipping into irrelevance and to rediscover the resilience that has long defined their legacy.

Terrible batting failure of CSK against RCB

A major area of concern for this team has been their inconsistent batting performances, particularly in the top and middle orders. The team has witnessed a recurring powerplay collapse; in their most recent defeat to RCB, the top order was decimated within just the first few overs as Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed for 7, Sanju Samson for 9, and Ayush Mhatre for 1. This poor start has become a trend, and despite having experienced names in the lineup, they have struggled to build substantial partnerships or convert starts into match-winning totals.
While Sarfaraz Khan provided a lone bright spot with a blistering 50 off 25 balls, and Prashant Veer added a fighting 43, the lack of strong support around them has exposed the fragility of the batting unit. Unless CSK can address these inconsistencies and find a more cohesive approach, their struggles are likely to persist, leaving a massive void in the aggressive, tempo-changing role expected of the side – especially after the high-profile acquisition of Sanju Samson.
The defensive fragility of the CSK bowling attack has been a defining factor in their start to the IPL 2026 season, particularly during the high-pressure death overs. The pacers have visibly struggled to make early inroads with the new ball; in their latest fixture against RCB, the unit surrendered a massive 97 runs in the final five overs, allowing the opponents to post a season-high 250/3.
This collapse has consistently pushed the team onto the back foot, forcing the bowlers into a defensive shell rather than an attacking mindset. In the middle overs, while the spin department has shown occasional discipline, it has lacked a consistent wicket-taking threat. The team is clearly missing specialist execution in the absence of Matheesha Pathirana(*now a part of KKR), and with Nathan Ellis sidelined due to a season-ending injury, the franchise was forced to draft in Australian pacer Spencer Johnson as an immediate replacement.
Without the tactical guidance of MS Dhoni to orchestrate field placements and bowling changes, the attack has looked increasingly disjointed and has faltered with inconsistent execution. Overall, the inability to stem the flow of runs has left Ruturaj Gaikwad with few reliable options to turn to when matches are on the line – leaving even Noor Ahmad and Matt Henry under immense pressure – and highlighting an urgent need for greater role clarity and sharper execution.

Absence of MS Dhoni is hurting CSK

One factor that cannot be ignored is that the team is missing its most tactically brilliant and influential figure: MS Dhoni. His absence has made it extremely difficult for Ruturaj Gaikwad to steady the ship during this winless start to IPL 2026. Without Dhoni’s meticulous field placements, calm presence, and his innate ability to read the match, CSK has looked unsettled in high-pressure situations. The team and its fans are now pinning their hopes on his scheduled fitness test, hoping he will be back in time for the clash with the DC which is on 11th April at Chennai.
Additionally, there are mounting questions about team combination and role clarity as the side struggles to find its most balanced XI. For a franchise known for stability and well-defined roles, this lack of cohesion has been particularly striking. Many see Dhoni’s return as the only immediate remedy for a campaign that is rapidly spiralling out of control.
CSK now find themselves at a critical juncture early in this tournament, where the weight of transition is clashing with the high expectations that everyone has for them in this league. While the season is still young, the issues across the batting department, bowling department, and leadership are too significant to ignore and demand immediate attention; the return of MS Dhoni would likely be the best way to address these challenges.
CSK has been a team that has successfully set multiple benchmarks over the years in terms of adaptability, staying calm under pressure, and bouncing back from difficult situations. These qualities will be tested once again. For Ruturaj Gaikwad, the challenge is no longer just about leading from the front, but about motivating a team that currently appears demoralised.
The Men in Yellow must urgently address their fundamental flaws, resolve their structural concerns, and rediscover their rhythm as soon as possible. Failure to do so could see their campaign spiral further, and if they fail to find a spark in their upcoming home stand, the 2026 campaign may well be remembered as the year the yellow wall finally showed its cracks.
