Punjab Kings (PBKS) started this IPL with a bang by winning the initial matches, and it looked as if it could be the first team to qualify for the playoffs. there seemed to be no real issue for PBKS as it was easily dismantling the opposition with fearless batting which was backed well by bowling performance, however very often in sport a time arrives when a team suddenly starts to slip and later fails to pick itself up, similarly for PBKS it has been a recurring issue because since losing that one game against RR it has faltered repeatedly leaving the cracks in the team exposed.
Today’s match against LSG at Lucknow is a crucial game for Shreyas Iyer and co. Punjab not only must win this contest, but it also needs other results to go its way. Undoubtedly, PBKS has dug a hole for itself now. PBKS are placed at the 5th position and have 13 points from 13 matches, whereas LSG are at the bottom with 8 points from 13 matches. From being in a dominant position at the earlier phase, it has dropped below the top four. Shreyas Iyer and his boys must regain their confidence and approach the last game of the tournament as it approached the first half.
Head to Head
Punjab has a better advantage by winning four games out of three, remember it scored a humongous 254 against LSG at the Mullanpur stadium and won that fixture by a big margin. Since 2025, PBKS have boasted a record of 2:1 at the Ekana Stadium, so it is needless to say that who will win tomorrow.
Although amidst all the hype, one must understand that PBKS’ success has relied on the powerful batting, which was backed up by great bowling; the batting almost covered up for the bowling, where it provided a cushion for the bowlers by scoring in excess of 200 almost in every game. It was like setting a trend, and the game against DC, where PBKS scored 264, literally scared the other teams of the might of PBKS.
For PBKS, Shreyas Iyer has been the key, but his recent outcomes have been disappointing, and he will be up against Mohsin Khan, tall left-arm quick who has got the better of him in the IPL. Shreyas’ record against Mohsin is not to be proud of, just 12 runs in 27 balls. Mohsin has definitely had the better of the PBKS skipper, but Shreyas will look to come up with better preparation tomorrow.
As far as LSG is concerned, Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant have enjoyed playing spin, and their record against Yuzvendra Chahal proves it. Pooran and Pant have a strike rate of 160 and 150, respectively, against Chahal; meanwhile, Opener Mitchell Marsh has had a season to remember with more than 500 runs. Along with him, the late addition, Josh Inglis, has surprised with his hard-hitting ability; the Aussie openers have done extremely well for LSG in a short span.
What has changed for PBKS?
It is a lot different side to what it was in the first half of the tournament. The batsmen seem to be underperforming, the bowlers have lost rhythm, and the fielders have butter on their fingers. Surely, this was not the Punjab we saw in the first half, where this team not only chased records but also set them. Now, the fielding woes are too much to cover at the moment, and it has affected the bowling as well. A record 19 catches dropped by PBKS have been a focal point in their failure.
Who will win?
It is even at the moment because neither of the teams has momentum. If PBKS has a better power play with the bat, maybe the openers put on a 100-run partnership in 10 or 12 overs, the pressure will be on LSG. Having said this, LSG cannot be taken for granted as well. Both teams will go toe to toe tomorrow, where PBKS will go for the win, and LSG will look to finish its season on a positive note.
