SL vs IND: Asitha Fernando Rattles Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Stump

The morning session has been won by Sri Lanka indeed, as the second test at Galle has reached a critical juncture. The hosts progressed through the innings after the wicket of  KL Rahul; meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal played cautious cricket and was locked in for a big knock. Sri Lanka’s disciplined bowling in the first session reaped them great rewards.

Both Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara have had a beautiful partnership, bowling in tandem. Lahiru Kumara and Asitha Fernando Fernando’s discipline mixed with aggression was crucial for Sri Lanka’s good start. Sri Lanka is trailing in this test, having already lost the first test, and will look to rebound at Galle.

Yashasvi Jaiswal drags on the stumps, walks off frustrated

In the 17th over, Yasahasvi Jaiswal was smashing boundaries (*hit 3 fours) to Asitha Fernando all around the park. Asitha Fernando tried all variations as he bowled around the wicket to over the wicket. On the last ball of the 17th over, Asitha Fernando toppled the stumps of Yashasvi Jaiswal leaving him angry. Yashasvi Jaiswal looked in command and was slowly moving towards his first fifty in this series but dragged a length ball on the stumps, gifting Sri Lanka another wicket.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has now scored only 77 runs in three innings, and his miserable series continues. The second innings would be his last chance to make his mark in this test. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal, while walking back to the pavilion was angry and had an ugly verbal spat with Asitha Fernando. Clever enough, the Sri Lankan players pulled him aside. Jaiswal has been involved twice in an on-field verbal spat now, as previously in a domestic game he was dragged off the field by Ajinkya Rahane.

Jaiswal is known for his short temper and must work on that. Jaiswal will now feel the pressure as this was his last opportunity in the test. The pitch is now even spicier to bat and India must bat through without losing further wickets. India’s score when Yashasvi Jaiswal got out was 66-2 in 17 overs

Critical juncture for India & Sri Lanka

Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal will have to rescue India now. It will be interesting to see how Gill plays in his innings; he is also hungry for runs. At the end of the first session, 25 overs have been bowled, and India has scored 88 runs, having lost both openers cheaply. Shubman Gill and Devdutt Padikkal are unbeaten on 11 and 13, respectively. Sri Lanka will have to keep on picking up wickets given the surface will slowly turn into a minefield.
