We are into the last day of the league stage of IPL 2026 and the penultimate game i.e. Match 69 of the tournament is the most important clash in the tournament. Three spots have been sealed and one is up for grabs. It’s the visitors Rajasthan Royals (RR) who have destiny in their own hands face-off against already eliminated Mumbai Indians (MI) the 5-time champions at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Three teams in contention for one spot with RR having fate in their own hands.
The equation is simple. RR win in the afternoon game, they are through to playoffs eliminating PBKS and KKR in the process. If RR loses, they will definitely be out and PBKS will most likely go through unless KKR wins by a humongous margin against DC at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata later in the night. It’s been a topsy-turvy campaign for RR, but they will like to get things right now. MI will want to be party spoilers and won’t give an inch. So, it will be a good contest.
Overview
It’s Match 69 of the IPL 2026 as already eliminated Mumbai Indians (MI) hosts Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Mumbai are out of the tournament while RR have their destiny in their own hands. All they have to do is win by any margin and they will be in playoffs in the Eliminator clash against SRH. If they lose, they will bow out for sure. So, it is a do-or-die battle for the Men in Pink. Mumbai has had a bad season and will want to end their campaign on a high.
PBKS and KKR will be watching and hoping for MI win. Although for KKR, even that might not be enough as they have to win by a big margin later in the night. But a MI win will make sure that Match 70 is not a dead rubber. PBKS has a good NRR and just wants RR to lose that’s it. Coming to this face-off, Mumbai Indians have been extremely poor this season, despite a lot of big names in the set-up.
But the likes of captain Hardik Pandya, the Indian T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav, The GOAT fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and to some extent the former skipper Rohit Sharma haven’t turned up for the hosts. Ryan Rickelton, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Corbin Bosch and AM Ghazanfar are some of the consistent performers. But Tilak had a forgettable outing in MI’s last game against KKR at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
On a slightly tough surface to bat on, MI struggled and crawled on their way to 147/8 in 20 overs. After a horrendous start, Varma tried to rebuild with his skipper. In the process, both Tilak and Hardik faced nearly 10 overs, scoring only 46 runs. If not for Bosch’s cameo in the end, they wouldn’t have crossed 130. Deepak Chahar, Ghazanfar, Bosch and Bumrah bowled well and didn’t let KKR run away with the chase. However, they didn’t have enough runs on the board to restrict the three-time champions.
MI are currently rooted in the 9th place, with 8 points from 13 games, having won four and lost nine. This is the afternoon game, and MI are playing for a cause under the Education and Sports for All (ESA) initiative. Over 20,000 children from undeserved backgrounds, tribal communities, and villages across Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Gujarat, including 200+ children with special needs, will come together at Wankhede.
On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals are fifth on the points table with 14 points from 13 matches, having won 7 and lost 6 games. They did very well to break their three-match winless streak and defeat LSG by 7 wickets in their previous game, which has helped them to keep their destiny in their own hands.
RR were breaking down after a string of defeats. Their skipper, Riyan Parag, was also sidelined, as was the senior pro, Ravindra Jadeja, due to injuries. Their bowling attack, which was on the receiving end of a few matches, continued to leak runs and had no answer to Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis’ carnage. However, a good spell from Yash Raj Punja in the middle phase and Jofra Archer’s fiery spell managed to keep LSG to 220/5.
It all came down to their batting, Stand-in captain Yashasvi Jaiswal finally came to the party with a blazing knock. He couldn’t get past his fifty, but gave a solid start, alongside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who teed off as he always does. The 15-year-old prodigy killed the run chase with a swashbuckling 93 off 38 balls and is now fourth in the Orange Cap list with 579 runs at a strike rate beyond 235. He missed out on a well-deserved century but another consistent batter, Dhruv Jurel, calmly took the team home with an unbeaten fifty.
It will be the second round of a much-awaited battle between Vaibhav and Bumrah. The last time MI faced RR in Guwahati, the latter came out on top in a rain-hit game by 27 runs. The boss baby smashed Bumrah for a six on the first ball he faced off the legend. So, the stage is set. MI will look to spoil RR’s party by eliminating them while RR looks to win and qualify for the playoffs. Which way is it going to go? Only time will tell.
Head-To-Head
MI and RR have met against each other in 31 clashes in which MI are just ahead by 16 matches to 15. At the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, it’s 5-4 to MI in 9 matches. It’s 5-5 in the last 10 encounters between the two. In the reverse fixture earlier this season, RR won the rain curtailed contest in Guwahati.
Pitch & Weather Report
The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium for today’s match is a traditional batting paradise. It features a flat, true red-soil surface with reliable, even bounce. Batters can trust the ball to come onto the bat nicely, setting the stage for a high-scoring game. This is an afternoon game starting at 3:30 PM IST. Unlike evening games, dew will not play a part in the match.
The weather forecast in Mumbai for today’s afternoon clash at the Wankhede Stadium indicates hot and highly humid conditions with a 0% chance of rain during the match hours. While Mumbai experienced some pre-monsoon light thunderstorm rain earlier this morning, the skies are clearing up. A complete, uninterrupted 40-over match is expected. The current temperature is 32 degrees Celsius, but the extreme 73% humidity makes it feel like 42 degrees Celsius.

Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Ryan Rickelton: He has been the best batter for MI this season. Yes, he missed a few games in the middle phase due to the combination factor, but he has always done well for his team. His record at the Wankhede is stellar and he will want to end his campaign on a high. Ryan Rickelton will be key as he can take on Archer and bamboozle him in power play.
AM Ghazanfar: He has been MI’s best bowler this season in terms of taking wickets. He has performed in whatever games he has got the opportunity to. Ghazanfar will be a key component as this is a day game and it will bring the spinners into the game one feels even though it’s a flat batting track. Spin will come into play. So, Ghazanfar will be a key player on this track.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: While all the focus will be on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, but Yashasvi Jaiswal could be a bigger player on this big day for them. The reason being, he can play the long innings. Plus, he has a tremendous record against MI in the past and has a hundred against the same opposition back in 2023. So, we feel Jaiswal will be the key to this innings and can take the game away from the opposition.
Jofra Archer: The speedster and spearhead of the attack, Jofra Archer will be key once again as he leads this attack. Yes, he has blown cold than hot in the last few games, but RR will look towards him to strike early in power play. He knows the Mumbai conditions having played for MI in the past, and will want to do well in this clash as well.

- Jasprit Bumrah remains MI’s primary weapon, taking 19 wickets in 16 matches against RR.
- Jos Buttler has a great record against MI as he has scored 533 runs in 10 innings with 30 sixes and five 50+ scores.
- Jasprit Bumrah vs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be an enticing contest to watch.
