IPL 2026: RCB Aims To Do Encore of 2025 Triumph

After winning their maiden IPL title last year in Ahmedabad, Royal Challengers Bengaluru will be brimming with confidence when they take the field as defending champions in IPL 2026. The aim for the Red and Gold Army will be simple: repeat the dose of 2025 as sky is the limit for the Challengers of Bengaluru. Led by Rajat Patidar, RCB team has the nice blend of youth and experience ready to do an encore. But like most teams, it has their strengths and weaknesses amongst others.

In this article, we will analyse RCB’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Strengths

  1. Strong Indian Core: Royal Challengers Bengaluru has a strong Indian core led by captain Rajat Patidar and stalwart player like Virat Kohli. There is stability in top order players and one name we have to watch out for is Devdutt Padikkal. RCB also has proven match-winners with experience in high pressure IPL games.
  2. Explosive Batting Depth: RCB has a tremendous batting depth as they have power hitters like Philip Salt and Tim David. The RCB team has multiple wicket-keeper batters like Philip Salt, Jitesh Sharma, and Jordan Cox that provides flexibility. The ability to post and chase big totals which is ideal for Chinnaswamy conditions.
  3. AllRound Depth: RCB has tremendous players like Venkatesh Iyer, Krunal Pandya, and Romario Shepherd who can do the job with both bat and ball. The auction focussed clearly on multi-skill players for the balance of the team. This in turn leads to and provides flexibility in team combinations and match-ups.
  4. Experienced Bowling Core: RCB has an experienced bowling core. Bhuvneshwar Kumar brings swing and death overs expertise. Josh Hazlewood adds world-class pace and accuracy if and when he is fit. RCB also has a solid supporting cast like Yash Dayal and Suyash Sharma.

Weaknesses

  1. Injury Concerns in Pace Attack: Josh Hazlewood is likely to miss the early games due to his ongoing recurring hamstring injury. Early disruptions in bowling combinations can hurt the momentum of the side.
  2. Overdependence on Top Order: RCB are over-reliant on their top order. They are heavily reliant on Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar for consistency. The middle order, though powerful, can be inconsistent under the extremeness of pressure.
  3. Spin Department Still Unproven: The spin department is still unproven from RCB’s point of view. The options like Krunal Pandya and youngsters lack elite wicket-taking pedigree. There is no established frontline match-winning spinner for RCB which could prove to be a bane for them going forward.
  4. Leadership Transition Phase: Rajat Patidar is still relatively new as a captain despite successfully winning IPL 2025. The tactical decisions under pressure remains untested at this level and this season will be a litmus test for Patidar as to how he deals with injuries in the team and take the team forward.

Opportunities

  1. Title Momentum & Confidence: RCB is coming in with renewed belief after recent success of ending the title drought. They have renewed confidence and opportunity to do even better. The positive dressing room culture can be a game-changer.
  2. Emerging Young Talent: Players like Jacob Bethell and Satvik Deswal add the X-Factor RCB needs and desires to do well. It is an opportunity to unearth match-winners for the defending champions Bengaluru.
  3. Flexible Playing XI: Multiple all-rounders in the team allows RCB to have match-up based selection and there is always scope for tactical adaptability with regards to the pitch on offer and opposition-based as well. The flexible playing XI gives an opportunity to experiment more.
  4. Home Advantage: It is an opportunity and a golden one at that to turn the Chinnaswamy into a fortress and an advantage. Batting friendly surface suits RCB’s aggressive style. The strong crowd support boosts the performance of the side.

Threats

  1. Bowling Under Pressure at Chinnaswamy: Chinnaswamy is a small ground and it leads to high scoring games. Even good bowling attacks like RCB can look average on this ground.
  2. Injury Risks to Key Players: Josh Hazlewood is already a huge concern, others could follow suit which may turn out to be a hindrance for RCB. Fast bowlers’ workload management will be crucial going forward as well.
  3. Strong Competition: RCB will get strong and stiff competition from other teams like MI, CSK, GT who have balanced squads with them. The margin for error in IPL is extremely small. So, if RCB are off their game, they could be threatened big time.
  4. MiddleOrder Volatility: Power hitters down the order like Tim David can be a hit-or-miss. The collapses threat is still there and could be a potential issue going forward as well. The volatility could cost RCB big time.
