IPL 2026: GT Aims For 2nd IPL Triumph.

Gujarat Titans (GT) have been one of the most consistent sides in Indian Premier League history ever since they came into the picture in 2022. The Titans won the 2022 edition, finished runners-up in 2023. They had a blip in 2024 where they missed the playoffs, but came roaring back last year in 2025 to make playoffs only to lose in Eliminator. Under Shubman Gill, they are a well-oiled machine and have a mixture of youth and experience.

Gujarat Titans (GT) have lost Sherfane Rutherford in trade to Mumbai Indians but they have Jason Holder now in their ranks and Glenn Phillips as well. The top-3 of B Sai Sudharsan, Gill and Jos Buttler are as good as any top three in the world. In this piece, we will look at Gujarat Titans’ strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

Strengths.

  1. Strong Core and Leadership: GT are led by Shubman Gill who has evolved into a dependable captain and elite T20 batter. The Titans have retained a stable core which includes Rashid Khan, Sai Sudharsan, and Mohammed Siraj ensures continuity. The Gujarat Titans have relied on stability which is a key reason for their success since 2022.
  2. Elite Bowling Attack (One of the Best In IPL): GT have an elite bowling attack which is right up there with the best of the teams. The pace battery consists of Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. The spin dominance and department has Rashid Khan and Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore. It is a well-balanced attack suited for all conditions.
  3. Explosive and Flexible Batting Unit: The top order for GT consists of Gill and Sudharsan. One is a proven run machine while Sai was the orange cap winner in 2025 edition. They have power hitters like Jos Buttler, Glenn Phillips, and Shahrukh Khan. They have an OG finisher like Rahul Tewatia. The Titans have the ability to accelerate at any phase.
  4. All-Round Depth: Players like Jason Holder and Washington Sundar adds balance to the GT squad. It also gives the Titans flexibility in team combinations and which sides to chose in the particular match. The all-round depth is there for all to see for Titans.

Weaknesses.

  1. Overdependence on Top Order: GT are overly and heavily reliant on their top three in Gill, Sudharsan, and Buttler. If early wickets fall, middle order consistency and stepping up to the plate becomes questionable. The concern is more highlighted recently due to Buttler’s current form.
  2. Inconsistent Middle Order: Players like Glenn Phillips, Shahrukh Khan and Washington Sundar are explosive but not always reliable. There is lack of a proven anchor player at No. 4 or 5 for that matter.
  3. Injury & Form Concerns: Jos Buttler’s recent struggles in international cricket raises concerns for GT. Fast bowlers like Kagiso Rabada or Prasidh Krishna have had injury histories in past seasons.
  4. No Clear Finisher Upgrade: After previous changes like Rutherford leaving for another team, the finishing still heavily depends on Rahul Tewatia. There is overdependence on him, something that may bother them going ahead in the tournament.

Opportunities.

  1. Captaincy Growth of Gill: IPL 2026 could be Shubman Gill’s breakout season as a tactical leader. He is already central to team identity and could be a crucial tournament to improve his game in T20Is and help the team claim silverware in order to come back in the side.
  2. Impact of New Signings: Jason Holder adds experience and death bowling strength. While Tom Banton provides aggressive back-up option. These two new signings makes GT one of the most formidable units of the competition.
  3. Spinfriendly conditions: Indian pitches especially Ahmedabad later in the season tends to favour the spin bowlers a lot more. GT’s Rashid and Sai Kishore combination can dominate proceedings if the conditions allows it to happen.
  4. Coaching Boost: The appointment of legendary Australian batter Matthew Hayden as batting coach could sharpen aggressive intent from the team and he can be vital to their success as well.

Threats.

  1. Strong Competition: Teams like CSK, MI, and RR for that matter have deeper batting line-ups. GT may tend to struggle if matches becomes high-scoring shootouts.
  2. Form of Overseas Players: Jos Buttler and Glenn Phillips are crucial from GT’s point of view. If they misfire, both of them, then the batting weakens significantly for the 2022 champions.
  3. Death Bowling Pressure: Despite boasting a strong bowling attack, consistency at the death overs can fluctuate without a specialist death bowler or closer as we say. Their attack is primarily a new ball attack. They may go the distance in the death overs.
  4. Tactical Predictability: GT’s strategy with strong bowling and a controlled chase is something that is well-known now to all the other teams. Their opponents may counter that with aggressive starts. Too predictable can become a threat for the Titans.

Predicted Performance of GT in IPL 2026.

GT’s performance will hinge on how their top-3 fares as they are very dependent on them and how they fare with the ball. It is too early to predict how they will perform this season. But looking at the team, they will be there in there about for the playoffs. First step will be finishing in top 4. If their top 3 fires, they will otherwise, they may struggle to reach playoffs.
