IPL 2025: Punjab Kings Eye Top 2 Amid Venue Shifts

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 resumes on May 17, 2025, following a suspension on May 9 due to geopolitical tensions, Punjab Kings (PBKS) are well-positioned to vie for a top-two finish. With 15 points from 11 matches, they trail Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), both at 16 points.

The revised IPL 2025 schedule, announced on May 12, 2025, confines the remaining 13 league matches to six venues: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. PBKS’s schedule includes:

Date Opponent Venue Match Number
May 18, 2025 Rajasthan Royals Jaipur 59th
May 24, 2025 Delhi Capitals Jaipur 66th
May 26, 2025 Mumbai Indians Mumbai 69th

Two of PBKS’s matches are in Jaipur, at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, known for its batting-friendly pitches that often lead to high-scoring encounters. This could favor PBKS’s strong batting lineup, including Shreyas Iyer and Marcus Stoinis, but may test their bowling attack, particularly their spinners like Yuzvendra Chahal.

The match against Delhi Capitals, originally scheduled in Delhi, has been relocated to Jaipur, a significant change as Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium offers variable conditions that can assist both pace and spin (IPL 2025 Revised Schedule). The final match against Mumbai Indians will be at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, a venue that typically provides bounce and carry, potentially suiting PBKS’s pace bowlers like Arshdeep Singh and Lockie Ferguson.

The concentration of matches in Jaipur offers PBKS an opportunity to adapt quickly to the venue’s conditions, but it also demands flexibility in their bowling strategy. Jaipur’s flat tracks may require a heavier reliance on spin to control the run rate, while Mumbai’s conditions could prompt the inclusion of additional pace options.

The shift from Delhi to Jaipur for the DC match necessitates a recalibration of tactics, as PBKS had likely prepared for Delhi’s pitch characteristics. Team Combination and Replacements

PBKS boasts a robust squad, led by captain Shreyas Iyer and coached by Ricky Ponting. Key players include:

  • Batsmen: Shreyas Iyer, Shashank Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, Nehal Wadhera
  • All-rounders: Marcus Stoinis, Azmatullah Omarzai, Aaron Hardie
  • Bowlers: Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Lockie Ferguson, Marco Jansen

A significant change is the replacement of Glenn Maxwell with Mitchell Owen due to injury. Maxwell, a seasoned all-rounder, was a key component of PBKS’s middle order and spin-bowling options. Owen, who scored a century in the Big Bash League (BBL) final, is an all-rounder expected to fill a similar role, though his relative inexperience at the IPL level may require adjustment.

PBKS must select four overseas players for each match, choosing from Stoinis, Owen, Jansen, Josh Inglis (wicketkeeper-batsman), Ferguson, Omarzai, Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett. Possible combinations include:

  • Jaipur (batting-friendly, spin-friendly): Stoinis, Owen, Jansen, Inglis (to bolster batting and spin with Chahal and Harpreet Brar).
  • Mumbai (pace-friendly): Stoinis, Owen, Ferguson, Jansen (emphasizing pace to exploit bounce).

The inclusion of Owen adds flexibility but also uncertainty, as his performance in high-pressure IPL matches remains untested. PBKS’s domestic core, including Arshdeep Singh and Chahal, provides stability, with Chahal likely to be pivotal in Jaipur’s spin-friendly conditions.

Playoff Venue Changes and Chances for Qualifications

The original playoff schedule had the first two matches in Hyderabad and the final two in Kolkata, but the revised schedule leaves playoff venues undecided, to be announced later. This uncertainty adds complexity, as PBKS cannot tailor their strategy to specific playoff conditions. However, securing a top-two spot would grant them a significant advantage: the winner of Qualifier 1 advances directly to the final, while the loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2.

PBKS’s current standing is strong, with 15 points from 11 matches (7 wins, 3 losses, 1 no-result) and a net run rate (NRR) of 0.376. They trail GT (16 points, NRR 0.793) and RCB (16 points, NRR 0.482). With three matches remaining, PBKS’s maximum possible points are 21, while GT and RCB can reach 22.

PBKS’s opponents present varied challenges:

  • Rajasthan Royals (9th, 6 points): A winnable match, given RR’s elimination from playoff contention.
  • Delhi Capitals (5th, 13 points): A tough contest, as DC is fighting for a playoff spot.
  • Mumbai Indians (4th, 14 points): A formidable challenge, with MI also in the playoff race.

Winning all three matches would position PBKS favorably, but even two wins could suffice if GT or RCB falter. PBKS’s lower NRR means they need convincing victories to improve their standing in case of a points tie. Their ability to adapt to Jaipur’s conditions and leverage their bowling strength in Mumbai will be critical.
