Legendary India cricketer MS Dhoni is among the stars who are rarely active on social media. MS Dhoni called time on his international cricket career in 2020 but he remains active as a player in the Indian Premier League, playing for Chennai Super Kings. When asked about how he maintains such a low social media profile,  MS Dhoni came up with quite an honest answer. He revealed that his managers keep pushing him to promote himself but he tells them that he doesn’t need a PR (Public Relations) if his game is good.

Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni, who hung up his international boots in 2020, remains an integral part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as he gears up to represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) once again in the forthcoming IPL 2025 season.

MS Dhoni’s career for Team India

MS Dhoni is among the greatest captains India ever produced. The legend retired from international cricket as the only skipper to win all three major ICC white-ball titles – T20 World Cup (2007), ODI World Cup (2011), and Champions Trophy (2013).

Talking about his IPL career, he led Chennai Super Kings to a record-equalling five IPL titles. MS Dhoni stepped down from CSK captaincy after guiding the franchise to its most recent title in 2023. Ruturaj Gaikwad succeeded him, and in his debut stint, CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Known for his down-to-earth nature, both on and off the pitch,  MS Dhoni recently shared his candid views on social media and public relations during a segment on Euro grip Tred Talks.

In a world where public personas often overshadow athletic prowess, the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman asserted that success on the field speaks volumes, rendering the need for excessive self-promotion moot. This came into the context where Indian players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were heavily trolled to the lowest point by the  Australian media during the current 2024-25 BGT season. The Australian media showed all levels of criticism calling great players a clown or posting pictures of having baby sippers in their mouth.

MS Dhoni, the two-time World Cup-winning captain of the Indian cricket team, is known for his simplicity both on and off the field. Dhoni showed another example of minimalism in a viral video where he shared his perspective on social media and public relations. One of the most celebrated personalities in the world,  MS Dhoni, candidly shared that while his managers often urge him to promote himself on social media avenues, he believes that if his performance on the field is strong, he doesn’t need public relations.

MS Dhoni has notably avoided the spotlight on digital platforms. Although he has massive followings, he rarely posts updates on social media platforms.

MS Dhoni Advocates for Authenticity in Cricket Amid Social Media Pressure

Former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has admitted that he is not a big fan of social media and hence prefers to stay away from sites like X and Instagram. He admitted that his managers often push him to be part of PR activities, but he tells everyone that if he plays good cricket, he doesn’t need to do his own publicity.

The 43-year-old has an account on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram as well. However, he very rarely posts updates unlike most of the other past and present cricketers across the globe.

In the latest episode of ‘Tread Talks’ of Eurogrip Tyres, the two-time World Cup-winning captain opened up on why he is not very active on social media platforms. The Indian legend commented (as quoted by The Times of India):

“I have never been a big fan of Social Media – throughout I have had different managers – I started playing in 2004, Twitter (Now X) almost got popular slightly later on then Instagram came – all the managers are like we should some PR, build this, build that so I looked at all and told the same answer, if I play good cricket, I don’t need PR.”

Ironically,  MS Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket back in 2020 via social media, sharing a short message with a video that captured the ups and downs of his legendary cricketing journey.

MS Dhoni will return to cricketing action during IPL 2025

While it has been a few years since MS Dhoni retired from international cricket, he continues to represent Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 43-year-old will be part of the upcoming edition as well, having been retained by the Chennai franchise as an uncapped Indian player for ₹4 crore on the basis of the tournament’s modified rules.

The former India captain, who has led CSK to five IPL triumphs, has represented the franchise in the most number of matches in T20 cricket. In 258 games for Chennai Super Kings, the keeper-batter has scored 5,118 runs at an average of 39.06 and a strike rate of 139.45, with 23 half-centuries. He has also taken 148 catches and has effected 46 stumpings.

Ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, the 43-year-old was retained by CSK as an uncapped player. This was possible after the IPL introduced a new rule allowing franchises to retain players in the uncapped category if they have not played international cricket for five years. Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, continues to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The Ranchi-born cricketer is set to don the CSK colors once again in the upcoming IPL 2025 season, playing as an uncapped player.

With an impressive following across social media, it’s intriguing to note Dhoni’s low-key approach, as he seldom updates his profiles, staying true to his belief that talent and performance should take center stage in the cricketing narrative. As the IPL 2025 draws closer, all eyes will be on Dhoni as he steps onto the field again, not merely as a player but as a symbol of integrity in the sport.
