Kane Williamson is set to miss the series opener at Chinnaswamy Stadium due to groin injury. The former is the leading run scorer for his test side and he will be eager for a comeback after not so promising series against Sri Lanka last month.

New Zealand captain Tom Latham confirmed the unavailiblity of their former captain from the first Test against India while expressing his dissapointment. The Blackcaps will take on India in a three match series, starting from October 16.

“It’s disappointing not to have Kane over here” – Tom Latham

Tom Latham, the newly appointed captain of the Test side after Tim Southee stepped down from the position, will be leading the Blackcaps against India as his first term as permanent captain of the side. He expressed dissapointments of not having the former captain and the star batter in his starting XI in the press conference at the eve of the first Test. Also, highlights opportunity for Will Young to take up the opening role.

“Its disappointing not to have Kane (Williamson) over here. Will Young will play tomorrow. He has been part of the squad for a long time. He has batted from opening to playing at number 3-4. It’s an opportunity to put his hands up, he has performed well in the past.” said Latham.

“It’s a huge exciting privilege for me to be in this position” – Tom Latham

Latham has taken charge of the Blackcaps in the difficult situation. The morale in the team must be low after the dispiriting result in Sri Lanka and the challenge intensifies against an in-form Indian side. However, the NZ captain is looking forward to the series. He asserted that the added responsibility is not new for him and he will try to give his best performance for the team.

It’s a huge exciting privilege for me to be in this position, if I am a captain or not a captain, I always try to perform my best for the team and that is certainly not going to be different being captain. Yes there is a more responsibility, but I have been in this situation before and have captained here before and back at home as well so I am excited to get into things and looking forward to it,” stated Latham.
