ICC T20 WC 2026: Afghanistan Aims To Continue Their Upward Trend In T20Is

2024 semi-finalists and one of the most upcoming teams in the world Afghanistan aims to continue their good work and be consistent in their performances when they take the field in the ICC T20 WC 2026. Afghanistan players have played various T20 leagues around the world and in this format, they tend to excel since it comes naturally to them. While the batting and pace bowling is a work in progress, their strength is spin bowling and certain venues in India where they are playing will aid the spinners or expected to aid them.

Afghanistan will be led by talisman Rashid Khan and they have got veteran player Mohammad Nabi in the ranks alongside others who are quite known to people following cricket. After the 2024 T20 World Cup, Afghanistan haven’t played much T20 cricket lately. They also suffered setbacks in Asia Cup group stage exit and then lost to Bangladesh 0-3. They lost the Tri-series final to Pakistan as well. Lately, they beat West Indies 2-1 for a confidence boosting win.

Afghanistan will play most of its matches in Chennai and it will be day games or morning games and spin could come into play which may play into their hands. But they are in Group D the Group of Death and going to the Super 8s from there will require hard work. Here, we will focus on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Team Afghanistan.

Strengths

  1. World Class Spin Attack: Afghanistan’s biggest asset remains their elite spinners in captain Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and veteran Mohammad Nabi. These bowlers are exceptionally suited to subcontinental conditions and can dominate batting line-ups on Indian and Sri Lankan wickets. Their experience in T20 leagues like the IPL also gives them an edge in tactical execution. Pitches in Chennai where they will play most of their games will suit their style of play.
  2. Proven T20 Performers: Several players in the team have delivered big performances against higher-ranked teams. Historic wins over Australia and New Zealand in recent global events have shown they compete with and beat top sides. This self belief instilled in them in this format is their biggest strength against the more fancied sides in the world.
  3. Growing Pace Support: Afghanistan are known for spin bowling without a shadow of a doubt. But the pace department is strengthening with bowlers like Fazalhaq Farooqi and Azmatullah Omarzai adding variety with bounce and swing which adds balance to the attack. Naveen Ul Haq also added value to the squad but since then has injured himself and ruled out of this tournament.
  4. Warm-Up Success: Early warm-up victories like beating Scotland yesterday by 61 runs demonstrates good form for Afghanistan and confidence gets built up ahead of the big mega event. The fact that they beat West Indies 2-1 in Dubai will act as a confidence booster for them ahead of the big event. Confidence is a big thing in sport especially cricket.

Weaknesses

  1. Inconsistent Batting: Despite talented batters like Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Sediqullah Atal in their ranks, the batting unit often relies on aggressive starts and lacks depth or adaptability in high pressure games and chases in particular. The middle-order collapses that happen remains a recurring issue. They struggle to chase scores of 150+ and setting a total is a comfort zone for them than chasing.
  2. Match Awareness Under Pressure: There have been many instances where Afghanistan struggled to finish matches in tight situations, particularly in knockout games or must-win games. This could prove to be a crucial factor and hindrance in tournament play. The lack of match and game awareness could come back and haunt the Afghans.
  3. Fielding and Pace Bowling Consistency: Fielding lapses and periodic inconsistency in the pace department can leak runs or fail to provide early breakthroughs, which is critical in T20s. This in turn leads to opposition having good starts and having wickets in hand and thereby the spin in the middle overs can be nullified easily by the opposition batters. The pacers inconsistency is a bane for Afghanistan as we have noticed in big tournaments.
  4. Over-reliance on Key Performers: Too much is often expected from a small core of stars in Afghanistan and if they have an off day, the team’s balance suffers especially in batting department. There is overdependency on players especially batters the openers at the top and if they fail, we have seen middle order crumbling and Afghanistan putting on a no show. This is a major weakness for Afghanistan.

Opportunities

  1. Capitalizing on Familiar Conditions: Playing India and Sri Lanka offers familiar spin friendly surfaces which is a perfect stage for their experienced bowling attack to shine. The spinners will come into play and that brings Afghanistan firmly in the game and an opportunity to shine.
  2. Building on 2024 Momentum: Having reached the semi-finals in 2024 which was their best ever performance anywhere, Afghanistan can use that experience and confidence to push further. They will try to match their performances and then maybe look to go one step further towards title contention. Things may not be easy in the first round, but they need to take it as a challenge to overcome.
  3. Strong T20 League Experience: Many Afghanistan players are active in various T20 franchise leagues across the world like IPL, ILT20, SA20, BBL, BPL to name a few. This exposes them to high-pressure situations and elite competition that enhance their match temperament and skills. The awe factor is removed from their head playing these leagues and rubbing shoulders with big players and they play freely on the big stage.
  4. Pre-Tournament Preparation: Pre-World Cup T20I series against teams like West Indies and others in similar conditions boosts their readiness and combination clarity. An opportunity to play together and iron out chinks and settle in on the best playing XI that they would require to come into the park.

Threats

  1. Tough Group Stage: Afghanistan are in a competitive group with New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and UAE. Only two teams can advance from this pool that means they must perform consistently to avoid early elimination. This is called the Group of Death i.e. Group D and New Zealand and South Africa will be tough challenges for Afghanistan than Canada and UAE. So, the Afghans need to be on top of their game to qualify for the Super 8s and avoid an early exit.
  2. Knockout Pressure: If they qualify for the Super 8s, then close matches in Super 8s or knockouts will test their temperament. Failure to handle this pressure has been seen before and history could repeat itself. If this thing happens, then Afghanistan could go back home earlier than they wish and must avoid all these situations coming their way.
  3. Big Match Execution: Despite possessing wealth of talent, Afghanistan sometimes struggle to maintain intensity over four phase of a T20 match and particularly against top sides who have deeper batting line-ups. The intensity tends to drop and the big teams take advantage of it and beat them even in close games. The execution seems to lack for them in big matches.
  4. Coaching Transition: Afghanistan have announced that coach Jonathan Trott’s tenure will end after the 2026 T20 World Cup, which may add potential strategic uncertainty post tournament and pressure on the current set-up as well. Trott has been a good coach and oversaw them in many successes and with him going, there could be extra pressure on Afghan players to perform and give him a fitting farewell which in turn, could lead too buckling under pressure from the players.

The Journey Ahead for Afghanistan in T20 World Cup 2026

Afghanistan have had good preparation in lead-up to this event. As we speak, they have already arrived in India and played a warm up game against Scotland which they won by 61 runs after posting 184/6 and restricting the Scottish to 123 all out in 19.3 overs. They will play another warm up game against West Indies which will be played tomorrow 4th February in the afternoon hours from 3 PM IST.

Then they will face the main matches and start their campaign against New Zealand in Group D at 11 am in Chennai on February 8th. They will then face South Africa on 11th February at 11 am in Ahmedabad. They then go onto face UAE again at 11 am on 16th February in Delhi. They conclude their group stage campaign against Canada on 19th February in Chennai in an evening game at 7 PM. So, three morning games and one evening game for the Afghans.

Crossing the first hurdle will be a challenge. So, don’t be surprised if we see a group stage exit from Afghanistan. But the Afghans might punch above their weight and upset the two strong teams and qualify for the Super 8s. If they achieve that, then there is a chance they reach the semis since they will be in a slightly easier group and playing their matches in Sri Lanka. So, anything can happen for Afghanistan. Crossing the first hurdle is the ultimate challenge at this stage.

Let’s see how the team performs when they start their campaign on Sunday morning in Chennai against the fancied New Zealand side.
