Yashasvi Jaiswal expressed his ideology after scoring a brilliant century on Day One of the first Test at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday June 20 against England. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 101 runs (159 balls) and was the first foreign batsmen to score a century on debut in Australia and England. He too was the fifth Indian batsman to score the feat in England. His role at the crease was instrumental as India ended their innings in that day with 359 runs against three wickets.
Yashasvi Jaiswal gave yet another proof of his growing stature in Indian cricket by slamming his fifth Test ton on Friday. Playing his maiden innings on the English soil, Yashasvi Jaiswal played with absolute control and withstood pain to reach his first ton in England in 144 balls at Leeds.
With the ton, Yashasvi Jaiswal is now the first Indian batter in the country’s 93 years Test history (India first played a Test in 1932 against England at Lord’s) to score a ton in his first match in both England and Australia. In the recently held 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy, Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed a ton in Perth.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has also joined an elite club consisting Sourav Ganguly, Vijay Manjrekar and three other Indians who have scored a ton in their maiden innings in England.

131 Sourav Ganguly Lord’s 1996

Yashasvi Jaiswal made a characterful hundred and skipper Shubman Gill crafted a graceful fifty as India punished a lacklustre England to reach a formidable 215 for two at tea on the first day of the opening Test of the five-match series here on Friday. They were as different as chalk and cheese, but both Gill (58 not out) and Jaiswal (100 not out) found immense success with their respective methods during an unbroken 123-run alliance for the third wicket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal brought up his 5th hundred in Test cricket off 144 balls and Gill his eighth half-century off 56 deliveries in his first outing as India Test captain, underlining the different route they travelled on the day. England might see this innings as an ominous early sign from Jaiswal that he might just replicate that 712-run series against them in India last year.
It was not a typical Jaiswal innings where he simply flayed the bowlers around, but he showed admirable self-restraint, particularly outside the off-stump. The left-hander was dismissed in that channel a couple of times while playing for India A against the England Lions in the recent tour matches, but here the 23-year-old did not repeat his mistakes.
He was also copiously assisted by the England bowlers, who struggled to discover the right line and length on a flaccid track. Their profligacy meant that the Indian batters received ample scoring opportunities. Even amidst his restrained avatar, Yashasvi Jaiswal brought some cracking shots off the shelf such as a crisp off-drive off pacer Josh Tongue or a carved six off the same bowler.Following his magnificient century Yashasvi Jaiswal coming off age received all the praises from the cricketing world all around.

Star India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal on Friday racked up his fifth Test hundred at Headingley against England, to put his team in a commanding position against the hosts in the opening game of their fourth World Test Championship campaign, yet again making the world stand up and applaud him.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 100* and skipper Shubman Gill’s 58* took India to 215/2 at tea on the first day of the opening Test against England in Headingley.
Yashasvi Jaiswal brought up his fifth century in Tests off 144 deliveries and Gill his eighth fifty off 56 balls in his first outing as India Test skipper, underlining the different route they travelled on the day.
“It was a pleasure to see Yashasvi Jaiswal bat in those English conditions today. Pure joy. Brilliant 💯,” Irfan Pathan tweeted on Friday evening.
“First day of a big tour, put into bat by the opposition, this is exactly what you want from your opener,” Wasim Jaffer tweeted.
“A hundred of pure class and character. Wonderfully constructed, Yashasvi! 👏 #YashasviJaiswal #ENGvsIND,” Pragyan Ojha tweeted.
“It just amazes me how these batters, after months of white ball cricket, take to Test cricket like fish to water,” Sanjay Manjrekar tweeted.
England might see this innings as an ominous sign from Yashasvi Jaiswal that he might just replicate that 712-run series against them in India in 2024. It wasn’t a typical Yashasvi Jaiswal innings where he flayed the bowlers around, but he showed admirable self-restraint, outside the off-stump.
England’s decision at the toss may have been intended to expose the relative inexperience in these conditions of India’s top order: of the five players to bat on Friday Jaiswal was playing his first Test in this country, Gill his fourth, and Sai Sudharsan – who got a four-ball duck – was making his Test debut.
But this intent was backfired on the English less experienced bowlers as Gill and Jaiswal making merry with staggering centuries and Rishabh Pant looking solid to score yet another century on Day 2 where India will start from the dominant position at 359 for 3
