ENG vs IND : Sanjay Manjrekar’s Harsh Take On Shubman Gill’s Wicket Dismissal

As the calendar turns halfway through 2025, Shubman Gill has cemented his place not just as a prodigious talent but as arguably India’s most complete cricketer across all three formats.

With a breathtaking 269-run knock at Edgbaston, the 25-year-old Indian captain Shubman Gill has not only posted the highest individual score by an Indian on English soil, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s iconic 221 at The Oval in 1979, but also emerged as India’s best batter across all formats this calendar year.  Shubman Gill’s numbers in 2025 speak volumes about his consistency, adaptability, and technical evolution.

With already 585 runs in the bag, Shubman Gill is extremely well placed to create history in Test cricket by going past the tallies of the legendary Sunil Gavaskar and Don Bradman. Gavaskar holds the record for most runs by an Indian batter in any Test series. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in 4 matches in India’s historic Test outing in West Indies way back in 1970/71. Gavaskar batted at an average of 154.80 in that series.

Similarly, the list of most runs by a batter in a single Test series is led by Don Bradman, who slammed 974 runs in 5 matches when Australia travelled to England in 1930. Bradman batted at a ridiculous average of 139.14, which also included his legendary 334, an iconic mark in Australian cricket. However Shubman Gill, had a rare failure in the first innings being caught out on 16 runs but he enroute that broke Virat Kohli’s record too.

During the India tour of England in 2018, Kohli played all five matches for India and amassed a total of 593 runs. But by crossing the nine-run run in India’s first innings of the third Test against England at Lord’s on Friday, Shubman Gill broke Kohli’s record.

After breaking Kohli’s record, Shubman Gill, who sits at the No. 6 position in the ICC Test batter’s ranking, also became the first Indian captain to score 600 runs in a Test series played in England.

However even after scoring such plethora of runs in just 5 innings, Shubman Gill’s mode of early dismissal seemed to have given England an early advantage in the Test match in accordance to the Former Indian batter now commentator Sanjay Manjrekar.

Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Shubman Gill’s early dismissal has given England an early advantage in the 3rd Test.

Shubman Gill scored 16 runs from 44 balls for India in the first innings of the Lord’s Test. During his stay at the crease, he hammered two fours and added 33 runs for the third wicket with KL Rahul. He was caught behind by Jamie Smith off Chris Woakes’ bowling on the first ball of the 34th over.

Former Indian batter now commentator Sanjay Manjrekar shared his views on how Shubman Gill’s failure in the third Test could affect the Indian Team. With over 600 runs in the series , Shubman Gill was expected to continue his good form and lead from the front for the visitors. Shubman Gill was dismissed on 16 runs off 44 balls by Chris Woakes in the final session.

Sanjay Manjrekar isnt too optimistic about India’s chances on Day 3 and feels that England bowling attack is much stronger in this fixture. However he has advised Ben Stokes – led side to be wary of Rishabh Pant, who can play counter-attacking innings under pressure. He said :

“Definitely, because the runs are not gonna come very easily. That’s where Rishabh Pant is gonna be important for India. But, I think there is a little more quality in English bowling attack and it’s a pitch where you would think, you don’t 500-600 runs to dominate. A lesser score can also have you on the same position.”

The pair of KL Rahul(53*) and Rishabh Pant(19*) have built an unbeaten 37-run stand to infuse confidence into the side, as they are 145/3 in pursuit of 387 and a lot would depend on them when Day 3 resumes for India.
