India is all set to begin the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 with a new and exciting opening pair. Shubman Gill, who has returned to the T20I side as the vice-captain, is likely to join Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order in the upcoming continental tournament. Shubman Gill made a comeback to the side on the back of strong performances in the IPL 2025 and a successful England tour. Thereafter, against the Englishmen, the left-hander was at his destructive best, with his 79 off 34 balls at Eden Gardens and the masterful 135 off just 54 balls at the Wankhede underlining it.
In this Asia Cup, the UAE conditions may pose a challenge or two at times for batsmen, especially against quality spinners and those tweakers who don’t usually err much in terms of line and length. From that perspective, there could be a little bit of pressure on Abhishek Sharma, as India too will be expecting him to make full use of the Powerplay.

The former India cricketer was the first to score centuries in all three formats for the Men in Blue in internationals. He was also a prolific run-getter in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and played a key role in helping Chennai Super Kings (CSK) win five titles.
Abhishek Sharma, on the other hand, had a stellar outing in IPL 2024, hitting boundaries for fun against some of the top bowlers in world cricket. He subsequently earned himself a spot in the Indian T20 setup and slammed his maiden international century in just his second game. Since then, Abhishek Sharma has played some enthralling knocks, relying on his ultra-aggressive approach with the willow. Raina admitted that he loves watching Abhishek Sharma bat and mentioned that the Punjab all-rounder is mentored by the legendary Yuvraj Singh.
Speaking in an interview on Shubhankar Mishra’s Youtube channel, Raina said :

Abhishek Sharma has made a name for himself with his fearless knocks in the Indian Premier League(IPL) and in international cricket. He is a part of Men in Blue’s squad for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup squad. The dangerous batter has 535 runs to his name at a fantastic strike rate of 193.84 from 16 T20I innings. In the IPL, he has amassed 1816 runs across 74 innings at a strike rate of 163.01.
Apart from Abhishek, Raina also picked two other left-handed batters – Priyansh Arya and Yashasvi Jaiswal –Â who could do well for the country. While talking about Yashasvi, Raina said that the Mumbai batter has a fighting spirit and praised his game awareness.
“I think Priyansh Arya can also be a very dominating player. However, I feel Yashasvi Jaiswal has a different work ethic. There is a fighting spirit. He scored a hundred in Australia and England. His game awareness is very good.”
Priyansh Arya is yet to earn his maiden India call-up. However, he impressed with the bat for Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, finishing with 475 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 179.25. Meanwhile, Yashasvi narrowly missed out on a spot in India’s squad for the Asia Cup, where Abhishek Sharma is expected to open the batting with either Sanju Samson or Shubman Gill.
