Anshuman Gaekwad To Be Provided With 1 Crore By BCCI For His Cancer Treatment

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has offered help to former cricketer and coach of India Anshuman Gaekwad. The 71-year-old is currently battling blood cancer and proceeding with his check-ups in London.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will release INR 1 crore for the former cricketer’s treatment. The former legendary skipper Kapil Dev and all-rounder Sandeep Patil requested BCCI to take the decision. Anshuman Gaekwad has played 40 Test matches and 15 ODI games in his career. Moreover, he has also guided the Indian cricket team as a coach in the ICC Champions Trophy 2000. India finished as runner-up in the Champions Trophy under his guidance.

Anshuman Gaekwad To Be Provided With 1 Crore By BCCI

Per reports, BCCI’s secretary, Jay Shah, urged the board to provide Anshuman Gaekwad with financial assistance. Hence, BCCI released 1 Crore for the former cricketer’s cancer care as an immediate measure. Moreover, it is believed that Jay Shah also reached out to Anshuman Gaekwad’s family to be acquainted with his disease and provide help. In a statement released by BCCI, it read,

“After approval from the BCCI Apex Council, Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, instructed the Board to release Rs 1 crore with immediate effect to provide financial assistance to Mr Gaekwad. The board stands by Gaekwad’s family in this hour of crisis and will do whatever is essential for Mr Gaekwad’s quick recovery”

Following Anshuman Gaekwad’s diagnosis of cancer, legendary cricketer Kapil Dev expressed his emotions. The 1983 World Cup-winning is deeply saddened by the incident as Anshuman Gaekwad and he were once teammates. Kapil Dev expressed that no one should suffer from the disease. Moreover, Kapil Dev has faith in BCCI to extend support to Gaekwad. Talking to Sportstar he said,

“It is sad and very depressing. I am in pain because I have played alongside Anshu and can’t bear to see him in this state. No one should suffer. I know the Board will take care of him”

Furthermore, Kapil Dev also expressed his opinion on BCCI’s system. The former captain seemed upset with the BCCI system. He said,

“Unfortunately, we don’t have a system. It is great to see this generation of players make good money. It is good to see the support staff members also being paid well. In our time, the Board did not have the money. Today, it has and should take care of the senior players from the past”

Anshuman Gaekwad had a short career of almost 12 years. The 71-year-old debuted for India in 1975 and retired in 1987. Between those years, he played 40 Test matches and 15 ODI internationals. Gaekwad hails from a family introduced to cricket. His father, Datta Gaekwad, was also a former cricket of India.

Anshuman Gaekwad also coached the Indian cricket team. Gaekwad was appointed as the coach for the Men in Blue in October 1997. The span of his coaching duty was from October 1997 to September 1999. Moreover, He was also reappointed as the coach in 2000. He guided the Indian team in the Champions Trophy 2000. India finished a runner-up in the 2000 edition of the Champions Trophy.
