Afghanistan senior player Mohammad Nabi is still on the run till the 2026 T20 World Cup. The 39-year-old has decided not to retire from the internationals any time soon. His outing with the Afghanistan team was in the T20 World Cup 2024 against South Africa in the semis.
Afghanistan had an adequate campaign at the T20 World Cup 2024. The nation restricted Australia to 127 runs and won the match by 21 runs. While three were great performances in the tournament, Mohammad Nabi failed to execute in the competition. The batter didn’t deliver with both bat and ball. He merely scored 44 runs in the total games he participated. In addition, there are four wickets to his name.
Mohammad Nabi To Continue Till The 2026 T20 World Cup
Talking about ending his T20 international career, Mohammad Nabi doesn’t have any plans for it. The batter considers him fit and will hold on to his fitness for a long time, trying hard. Moreover, the 39-year-old clearly stated that the 2025 edition of the Champions Trophy will be his last. He might stretch his ODI career to one year after the Champions Trophy. However, He is not looking to end his T20I career any time soon. Mohammad Nabi will mark his attendance in the 2026 T20 World Cup if selected, and it might be his last leg. Talking to Cricbuzz he said,
“For how long do I want to continue my cricket? Still, my body is working and I am running fast. I am fielding in the boundary taking catches well and doing bowling well. Still, I am doing well and I am trying to keep myself (fit) for as long as possible. Afghanistan team needs me as well at this stage but still may be Champions Trophy will be my last Champions Trophy in 50-over (format) and after that maybe one year and that’s it”
Furthermore, Mohammad Nabi stressed being fit for the game and continuing to work hard training. He highlighted food as the primary component on his road to recovery. He further said,
“Hope so (about playing in the next T20 World Cup). If I am selected I will have to play. I am not young as I am 40 years old man. Still, I try my best to train hard and do my recovery as quickly as possible and it all depends on your food and how you eat. How you eat clean and good food as it makes you more fit”
Mohammad Nabi lauded his team for their performance in the T20 World Cup 2024. He talked about beating prominent teams in the World Cup. Afghanistan reached the semi-finals in the 2024 T20 World Cup for the very first time. Nabi noted it to be their big achievement in cricket life and was hopeful more would come their way. He said,
“It gives us a lot of experience and also brings that experience to the national team and we share it with the youngsters. Afghanistan’s T20 performance (in the World Cup) was really good. We beat big teams in the tournament. Yeah, first time in the semifinal and the tough four and that was a great achievement in my cricket life and hopefully more to come. As a team, we played and performed in the World Cup and everyone contributed a lot in this World Cup”
