With the 3rd match of this Tri-Series fully complete, New Zealand officially moves up the table after cruising through another match. Beating Zimbabwe by eight wickets, it seemed like they had all their pieces put at right places in order to ensure victory.
As this Black Caps unit was without Glenn Phillips, who has now been ruled out for the whole series, they got a ton of other vital pieces like Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra back during this match to further bolster their unit.
It showed during this match and provided a spark for New Zealand to race through this tournament as they showed their superiority against a side like Zimbabwe. Captain Mitchell Santner once again did a terrific job of following suit with his tactics and keeping many of his guys motivated. With this victory, the Black Caps unit might now just be one game away from making the finals, with a crucial match against South Africa being their next fixture.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will be under a ton of more pressure and feel massive heat after this match because this Tri-Series was created to impact their play. But, after two recent weak performances and now being at the extreme bottom of the table, their hopes of not being eliminated will rest on their performance against South Africa this Sunday. Trying to make a comeback for the ages, it’s first important to see key performers and moments of this match for both sides that led to today’s final result.
Zimbabwe: Batting Gets Completely Decimated
As this Zimbabwe unit finished 120/7 during the first innings, their batting unit continued seeming like it was in a world of trouble. One surprising factor up top was Wessley Madhevere, as he scored 36 runs and produced four elegant boundaries to add towards another controlled 20+ knock by Brian Bennett.
Brian Bennett & Wessley Madhevere formed a 37-run partnership, but from that moment on, it went downhill for the Chevrons today. Wicketkeeper Clive Mandade couldn’t seem to get off the mark as he didn’t even squeeze one boundary through, while their only hope in Sikandar Raza seemed out of sorts. Despite having had a very strong recent performance, the captain played way too many dot balls and managed to just hit one four on 18 attempts.

Even when Zimbabwe was 71/3 and he tried to create a smaller partnership with their other top all-rounder in Ryan Burl, it only lasted for a short time as they created a partnership of 13. Although the lefty Burl seemed like he was off to a pretty strong start, batting-wise wise with two fours in quick succession, Michael Bracewell took him out pretty handily.
Towards the end was this group was 98/6, their closing batsmen helped this group reach 120 in the final three overs. Being some more of a respectable score, Tintotenda Maposa really found a groove in his finishing role as he knocked in 9 runs and supported Tony Munyonga, who was facing most balls.
New Zealand: The Pace and Spin Attack Dominate
For New Zealand, their extremely deep bowling unit showed up once again as they got another team all out well under 160 runs. A group that always seems to have one of the best surprise elements, they also do have a pretty loaded number of bowling options for all 20 overs. Leading the charge is Matt Henry, who has really worked on his economy in this Tri-Series and allowed just 26 runs in his full spell
The even bigger factor was that he picked up three wickets, including that of Brian Bennett, to end Zimbabwe’s early partnership. Another big pacer in this team that made a huge impact today was Jacob Duffy, who once again was reliable to continuously stop run rates from going higher whenever New Zealand saw a spike.

Having just given up one boundary in his three overs, Adam Milne also made a comeback to this side and cleaned bowled Wessley Madhevere early on when he was running to a half-century. Now going into the spinning options, it remains a pretty strong part of this group despite Ish Sodhi not playing today.
All-rounder Rachin Ravindra bowled a delivery that completely fooled Clive Mandande and led to a stumping. With him not being the only lefty spinner on the side, the other one who made a massive impact was Mitchell Santner, who got to finish his full bowling quota and allowed just 18 runs in four overs. Lastly, to mix things up, they gave a couple of overs to right-handed Michael Bracewell, who was a little more expensive than the rest but also got Ryan Burl out.
New Zealand: Devon Conway roars with a stunning half century
In the other phase of this match, New Zealand dominated once again and really controlled the tempo while batting. Although they started on the wrong foot by Tim Seifert getting out at 5/1 to another wonderful ball from Blessing Muzarabani, that came right before a big partnership that moved this match in this Black Caps units’ favor.
Rachin Ravindra made a massive difference in that 59-run partnership for the 2nd wicket after he scored 30 runs and showed a great ability to hit drives in open gaps. Mixing it up by going long for six as well, he was helped a ton by Devon Conway on the other side, who hit yet another half-century while making it tougher for bowlers to get proper angles since he was left-handed.

With Ravindra also batting with the same hand, Conway imposed his will later on in the innings, but first started with less risky shots to create a nice base for himself. Finishing with 59 runs in his wonderful innings, he managed to increase towards 147.50 strike rate after knocking two sixes out of the park. Not only was his partnership impactful with Ravindra, but Devon Conway also created a great one alongside Daryl Mitchell to finish off this match. As they combined for 58 runs to get towards 122 and end up victorious by 8 wickets, Mitchell had 26 runs of 19 balls and continued showcasing to many why he is still one of New Zealand’s finest middle-order closers.
Zimbabwe: Many Pacers Had A Tremendously Rough Match
Despite Zimbabwe coming in with their three major fast bowlers, only Blessing Muzarabani was the one to perform out of that group. Finishing with a 6.75 economy in his four-over spell, he was the initial piece that put pressure on this New Zealand unit by getting Tim Seifert out.

Many other bowling pieces struggled, including Trevor Guwandu, who was smashed towards the end for 28 runs and went for a 15+ economy. Another guy is Richard Ngarava, who relatively keeps matches close, but today, for some reason, he only bowled at an 8.33 economy and wasn’t helped by Tinotenda Maposa, who bowled at a relatively high runs per over rate. Seeing this, it was definitely a game for most Zimbabwe bowlers to forget.
