With this Zimbabwe’s unit heading back to the World Cup after missing out last time, things will need to be much better for them after expectations are high for them once again. Seeing that this unit was able to smash through the African Qualifiers and has found many new pieces recently, it will be interesting to see if they end up making their deepest run yet.
After facing numerous issues, such as Sean Williams’ suspension and subsequent retirement, this is one of those teams that had to rebuild everything from scratch to return to a similar position as in past times. Knowing that this could potentially be Captain Sikandar Raza’s last ever T20 World Cup, they will have to make the best use out of not wasting another legend’s career.
Looking at past results, the furthest they ever made it was to the Super 12’s in 2022, where they beat several squads like Pakistan and Ireland; no one should count this Chevrons team out against full-time members, as they have a history of pulling off some great miracles against them.
In a country where the cricket board has fallen in the last several years and are in much debt, this could be a huge chance for them to rise towards their prominence once again, like the 1990’s. Now that the cup is only about a week away, it will be very interesting to see how the Zimbabwe side does in their warm-up matches against Oman and Netherlands, while trying to prove their mark.
Strengths: Fast-Bowling Will Be An Extremely Loaded Unit From Top To Bottom
The biggest strength for this Zimbabwe unit is the fast bowlers they have, and the amount of pace each one can deliver with. Starting at the name Blessing Muzarabani, he’s a right-handed tall bowler who continues providing exceptional bouncers at 6’8″, while also being known for whipping with pace. Someone who can have a consistent 140 speed, many opposing batsmen will need to watch out for him because when this piece is in form, nothing can stop him. Taking 93 wickets in his career so far, their main left-handed bowler will continue being Richard Ngarva, who is still this unit’s top option as he provides an unbelivable amount of swing and speed in many angles.
Being the first ever Zimbabwe bowler to cross 100 wickets in this format, Richard Ngarva abilites will really let them know that they have someone who can keep attacking the stumps every match.
Opening up room for Graeme Cremer, 37 wickets in 31 matches, he will be their third option and someone who can keep low economies. Despite being out of cricket for a pretty long while, it seems like he hasn’t lost much form and should make a great combination with Brad Evans to lead that second unit of bowlers. With their last big piece being Tinotenda Maposa, 14 wickets in 20 matches, this is someone who continues learning and building confidence at the highest stage.
Weaknesses: Middle-Order Has No Consistency That They Can Display
This Chevron unit’s biggest weakness remains its power-hitters because they haven’t shown any capabilities of leading this side past their required score. Given that Sikandar Raza is one potential option who could move down the order, if he doesn’t, their main option will be someone named Tony Munyonga.
Seeing that Munyonga, 359 runs in 36 matches, has an average below 15, he has never been able to produce the big shots under pressure and seems to lose track of where he is hitting at times. Despite being known as someone who was supposed to be this next great finisher, a lot of pressure will be on him in this World Cup, or he could potentially be dropped for a while.
Looking at Tashinga Musekiwa, this is another piece who hasn’t been able to produce anything down the middle as he keeps on getting out between 10 to 20 runs, while his average has been stuck at 18 for a while. Although he was not really known for his power-hitting at first and was more of a classy player, that transformation hasn’t worked very well, while their other piece in Wellington Masakadza, is almost non-existent when batting.
Seeing this and knowing that both Ryan Burl, plus Sikandar Raza will barely ever be asked to move down this low, it will be up to these younger struggling pieces to change their name and provide a type of innings no one has ever seen or expected from them.
Opportunties: Top-Order Batting Can Be An Extremely Scary And Explosive Unit
On the Zimbabwe batters that come much earlier on, there are a lot of players who can make an immediate impact at the top of this unit. First mentioning the name Tadiwanashe Murmani, he will be a master from the left-hand as this piece has already hit 7 half-centuries in his short career.
Scoring over 1,000 runs in 60+ matches, it will be important to keep an eye on him, while their main batsmen, Brian Bennett, will be on the opposite side. Knowing that Bennett has already smashed nearly 1,600 runs in this format and continues building his name, most big matches will need a great start from him in order for this Zimbabwe unit to score a very high total.
Seeing that Brendan Taylor has kind of fallen a little bit in recent times, he still has the skill to hit half-centuries when the team needs it most, and should be a reliable part of this mix. Getting up there in age, this may be his last World Cup, so he is going to strive for the best performances for his team.
Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza will potentially come in at two-down and keep on playing classy shots, while also showing tons of aggression towards bowlers. Someone who is looking to hit the 3,000 mark in T20I runs for Zimbabwe, he could be the first ever, and will get tons of support from Ryan Burl, who has been another player known for closing out matches.
Threats: Spinning Attack Could Create A Huge Problem For This Side
Talking about spinners, it is pretty clear that Zimbabwe doesn’t have an ample number of them, and that could lead to further issues. As Wellington Masakadza leads them from the left side, he has been a very inconsistent piece who only took 48 wickets in 75 matches.
Sometimes, going for quite a big economy as well, there will be a lack of trust from him, with their only other major spinning option being Sikandar Raza. Although Raza has picked up 100 wickets over his long career, the issue is that he will be the only piece who can limit runs because Ryan Burl is just a part-timer. Seeing that they only have three true options on their side, it will be a very big question moving forward.
Squad
Sikandar Raza (c), Brian Bennett, Ryan Burl, Graeme Cremer, Bradley Evans, Clive Madande, Tinotenda Maposa, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza, Tony Munyonga, Tashinga Musekiwa, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers, Richard Ngarava, Brendan Taylor
Prediction
Zimbabwe is placed in stern Group B of Ireland, Sri Lanka, Australia & Oman. If the Chevrons make it to Super 8 stage then they would get an automatic qualification for ICC T20 WC 2028. The team heavily relies on the skipper Sikandar Raza in all the 3 aspects of the game. If we look at the matches of Zimbabwe, then they are going to play all 4 matches in Sri Lanka as they get that privilege. It’s quite tough to say that Zimbabwe will qualify for Super 8 as they need to beat one of the island nation or Australia to advance to next group. We should not forget that Zimbabwe didn’t qualify for ICC T20 WC 2024 as they were knocked out from qualifiers itself. The batters need to set 170+ runs on board as bowling alone can’t win matches for them.
