WI vs SCOT: West Indies Win A Nail Bitter Against Scotland

West Indies Women held their nerve in a dramatic finish to defeat Scotland Women by 7 runs in a closely fought T20 Women’s World Cup encounter. After posting 153/6 in their 20 overs, the West Indies side looked in control for most of the game, but a determined effort from Scotland kept the contest alive until the final over. The match featured explosive batting, crucial wickets, a costly run-out, and several momentum shifts before West Indies eventually secured the win by bowling Scotland out for 146 on the final ball of the innings.

Stafanie Taylor’s Late Blitz Powers West Indies to a Competitive Total

West Indies had a steady but far from perfect start after losing Qiana Joseph for 13 in the fifth over with the score at 24. Captain Hayley Matthews struggled to accelerate and managed only 14 from 22 deliveries before Scotland continued to tighten their grip by removing Deandra Dottin for 14. Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle then rebuilt the innings, with Campbelle contributing a valuable 36 from 26 balls.

A major turning point in the first innings came when Campbelle was run out on 36 at 80/4 in the 14th over. Scotland looked capable of restricting West Indies to a below-par total when Chinelle Henry also departed at 85/5. However, Jahzara Claxton’s quick 16 from just 9 balls and, most importantly, Stafanie Taylor’s unbeaten 47 from only 19 deliveries completely changed the momentum.

StafanieTaylor struck four fours and three sixes at an outstanding strike rate of 247.37, helping West Indies score 68 runs in the final 5.3 overs. The 18th and 19th overs proved particularly expensive for Scotland as the Caribbean batters launched a late assault. West Indies eventually reached 153/6, a total that looked slightly above par considering they had been 85/5 earlier in the innings.

For Scotland, Katherine Fraser was the standout bowler with figures of 2/34, while Rachel Slater and Kirstie Gordon picked up one wicket each. Scotland’s fielding remained sharp throughout the innings, highlighted by Campbelle’s crucial run-out that briefly swung the match in their favour.

Scotland Fight Back Through Carter, but West Indies Hold Their Nerve

Scotland’s chase began aggressively as Darcey Carter and Katherine Fraser added 51 runs in just 5.1 overs. Fraser’s attacking 20 from 11 balls gave Scotland early momentum before Hayley Matthews struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Fraser and captain Kathryn Bryce within two deliveries. Those wickets reduced Scotland from a strong position to 51/2 and shifted the pressure back onto the batting side.

The middle overs belonged to the West Indies. Sarah Bryce, Megan McCall, and  Priyanaz Chatterji all fell cheaply as Scotland slipped from 51/1 to 74/5. Matthews produced a match-winning spell of 3/19, while Aaliyah Alleyne provided excellent support with 3/11 from her two overs.

Despite the collapse, Darcey Carter kept Scotland in the contest with a fighting 59 from 62 balls, anchoring the chase brilliantly. Abtaha Maqsood Lister added a quick 33 from 25 deliveries and briefly revived Scotland’s hopes. The partnership carried Scotland to 132/5 with less than two overs remaining, bringing the required rate within reach.

The decisive moment arrived in the 19th over when Carter was dismissed for 59 at 132/6. Scotland then lost four wickets for just 14 runs, including the dismissals of Lister, Kirstie Gordon, and Rachel Slater. A sharp run-out of Georgie Fontenla on the final ball completed the collapse as Scotland were bowled out for 146.

West Indies were not flawless in the field, but they executed the pressure moments better. Scotland’s lower order could not capitalize on the platform created by Carter, and the inability to keep wickets in hand during the final two overs ultimately proved costly.

West Indies Women showcased their experience in key moments to secure a hard-fought seven-run victory. Stafanie Taylor’s explosive unbeaten 47 and Hayley Matthews’ all-round leadership were the defining factors in the win. Scotland Women displayed tremendous fighting spirit, with Darcey Carter’s half-century keeping them alive until the very end, but the loss of wickets at crucial stages prevented them from completing the chase. The match served as another reminder that in T20 cricket, a few overs of brilliance can completely transform the outcome.
