The Somerset all-rounder has enjoyed arguably the best season of his career. In the County Championship,Craig Overton has scored 548 runs at an average of 45.66, including three centuries, while also claiming 33 wickets at 19.54, making him one of Division One’s standout performers. His impressive form has continued in The Hundred, where he has emerged as Trent Rockets’ leading pace bowler, returning combined figures of 6 for 99 from 80 balls while also delivering a match-winning unbeaten 20 off six deliveries against London Spirit.
Those numbers explain why Overton suddenly finds himself back in England’s Test selection conversation.
“I’d like to think so,” Overton said when asked if he was in contention following Stokes’ retirement. “From what I’ve done this summer, I feel like I could go close.”
His confidence is understandable. Unlike previous seasons, Overton’s contribution is no longer limited to his bowling. A winter spent recovering from double hernia surgery allowed him to focus extensively on his batting technique. The results have been remarkable.
“I’ve worked on my hand positions… it’s taken a while to figure out what works for me, but it seems to have clicked,” he explained.
That technical improvement has transformed him into a genuine lower-order contributor, something England desperately need after losing Stokes’ ability to influence matches with both bat and ball.
England’s greatest challenge lies in replacing the balance he offered. Stokes could comfortably bat at No. 6 while delivering long, hostile spells with the ball. Overton is unlikely to replicate that role immediately. His previous Test record—eight matches with a batting average just above 15—suggests he remains a bowling all-rounder rather than a genuine top-order batting option.
Where is Sam Curran?
On paper, Sam Curran appears the obvious successor. He is younger, left-handed, experienced in international cricket and already established as an all-rounder. Yet injuries have interrupted his 2026 campaign, while his red-ball consistency has remained a concern. Sam Curran hasn’t played any Tests since 2021 Test series against India . More importantly, England’s current attack has lacked height and sustained seam movement, qualities Overton naturally brings with his 6-foot-5 frame and ability to extract bounce.
Overton also offers a contrasting skill set. While England’s recent philosophy under Brendon McCullum prioritised express pace, the team appears increasingly open to bowlers capable of winning through accuracy and movement rather than sheer speed.
“I’m never going to be a bowler that can run in and bowl 90mph,” Overton admitted. “But there are people around the world who have done really well bowling 81-82mph… It’s trying to find that right balance.”
That comment perhaps best reflects England’s current dilemma. The search is not necessarily for another Ben Stokes—it is for a player who restores the balance that Stokes once provided.
Whether Craig Overton ultimately earns that opportunity remains to be seen. But based on his County Championship dominance, his impact in The Hundred, and his significantly improved batting, he has arguably produced the strongest audition of any seam-bowling all-rounder this English summer.
Replacing a player of Ben Stokes’ calibre may be impossible. Yet if England are looking for someone capable of bringing reliability with the ball, valuable lower-order runs and valuable experience into a new era, Craig Overton has ensured his name can no longer be ignored.
