Following a poor Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, former England cricketer David Lloyd feels Virat Kohli is long past his peak and will continue to struggle in Test cricket. India lost the series to Australia 1-3, and Virat Kohli only managed 190 runs at a dismal average of 23.75 in five Test matches.

Given his poor results since 2020, Virat Kohli’s Test form has been a hot subject among fans and former Indian players. The top batsman has only scored three hundreds in his last 39 Test matches, averaging less than 31. In Indian cricket, these are exciting times. Many players’ futures may be at stake after Australia won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a 3-1 victory and lost a home series 0-3.

While Virat Kohli’s career is also on the line, Rohit Sharma may already be finished playing Test cricket. India will not play any Test cricket between now and their upcoming Test series against England, which begins in June. With Kohli’s terrible form, it will take a miracle for the King to regain his throne.

“Virat Kohli Knows That He Is Past His Best” – David Lloyd

Talking about Kohli’s indifferent form on talk Sport Cricket, Lloyd said [Via Hindustan Times]:

“Virat Kohli knows he is past his best and that will hurt. When India come to England, you know where he’s going to be. Just outside off stump, and the business area will be the slips. At 36 years of age, up in the mind, he knows what he should be doing. Your reflexes gently go. Ponting said he carried on a bit longer than he usually would have.”

“The selectors should know. He is one of the greatest players we have seen but is past his best. The coach Gautam Gambhir will have an enormous say, a big say, because he has been in that dressing room. He has lost time. His time is over. The one thing when you talk about great cricketers, that the rest haven’t, is time. He has lost time. It’s gone. His time’s gone. It comes with age.”

Even in the home series against New Zealand prior to the Australian tour, Virat Kohli had a terrible time, averaging less than 16 in three Test matches. His poor performance was a major factor in India losing their first home series since 2012.

Time To Find A New Dravid Or Tendulkar?

David Lloyd said that the administration and selection of the Indian squad have to try to bring in fresh talent from the England Test series.

India was ousted from the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the first time after losing six of their previous eight red-ball encounters. In 2021 and 2023, they placed second in the tournament’s first two iterations.

“When a team is in transition, they’ve got to find new players. That’s what the selectors, the coaches, the captain – that’s what you’ve got to do. They’ve got plenty of cricketers to choose from India and it’s a great opportunity for the younger cricketers to make a mark. If I was involved, I would be stimulated by it. I might just find a new Dravid, a new Tendulkar or a new Ganguly because that’s how they also came into the team,” said Lloyd.

Team India’s focus will now shift to the white-ball formats with their next Test assignment being the five-match series in England, starting in June.
