Temba Bavuma’s Fiery Knock Helps Him Continue Having Australia’s Number
With the 1st ODI between South Africa and Australia finally done, it was an immense victory by this Proteas, who were fighting for revenge once again. Coming out on top by 98 runs, the one man who stood tall and strong against this Aussies once again was none other than Temba Bavuma. Having gained captaincy a couple of years back and helping to remove the “choking” label from his side, there has been a noticeable impact from him that has helped win the WTC in June, plus now already being 1-0. It almost seems like whenever he is leading South Africa, they never lose and always stay focused on tasks ahead, while making minimal mistakes during crunch time, where it matters most.
As this side had come off a tough tri-series loss, and lost their T20I 2-1, many fans were ready to say that this side’s progressions to becoming a champion team were all a fluke. But, one man delivered for them yet again, and now many of those same people, plus former cricketers, are taking back what they said. This includes Michael Vaughn, who explained that England’s loss to India during their final test match looked like a way South Africa would lose games after the Proteas had a tough ending in Tri-Series play. Instead of letting such people affect them, guys like Bavuma and Aiden Markram used this fuel as fire to continue helping their nation be the only team that has a winning record against Australia in ODIs at 56 wins to 51 losses.
Massive Partnership In The Middle Showed A New Duo Could Be Made
Looking at Temba Bavuma’s recent performances prior to this one, he had always seemed to have his strongest time batting with Aiden Markram. Two batsmen who could score over 60 runs combined on average, outside of that the captain has been able to put together strong innings, but there has been no such partnership like that. This was until today, where both him and newer batsmen Matthew Breetzke, just his 3rd ODI, showed how they could start off this middle-order. With Bavuma understanding that Breetzke was more of an aggressor who has had strike rates over 100, he let him play extremely fast and hit shots that were of his natural intention with 8 combined boundaries.
Meanwhile, Temba on the other side, was playing very controlled and seemed like a true leader who commanded his innings by staying steady. No matter how fast his partner was going, he understood that staying stagnant at his end and being on strike was crucial for his team to score a high total. This style of play, where both batsmen complemented each other, helped gain a 98-run partnership, and they were able to continue through 16 overs. Having been 131/2 when Breetzke walked in, this newfound duo was able to lead their side towards a 223/3 score while taking on several bowlers like Adam Zampa and Nathan Ellis throughout the middle part of their innings.
Bavuma Half-Century Started With Classic Combination And Ended With Defending His Wicket Well
Seeing that Temba Bavuma himself hit 65 of 74 deliveries in this match, he had another strong partnership at the start, which really gave him a boost. Although most of his 5 boundaries were hit a little later on, during the second-wicket combination with Aiden Markram, he still hit some wonderful drives and really got his feet set. In a 39-run partnership with another South African hero, Bavuma being defensive helped Markram attack boundaries pretty easily and finish with 9 during his classy innings. Although it seemed like these two could go on for several overs, Markram got caught at 82 runs of a wonder Ben Dwarshuis ball and brought in the previously mentioned Matthew Breetzke, who South Africa’s captain helped establish.
The one key thing about this fiery knock that Temba had was his ability to stay poised for more runs and not rush things despite wickets being lost around him after Breetzke’s departure. Playing a knock to stay there towards the latter part of these innings, he let others take all the risks they wanted and score at a much faster rate. As Tristan Stubbs had just gotten out on his second ball after trying for a long shot, Dewald Brevis was a similar case of six-and-out. But, through all this, Bavuma stayed composed and didn’t follow his opposing batsman’s style of going big, while creating a new 30+ run-partnership with Wiaan Mulder. Another game-changing one throughout the innings, it helped South Africa reach 266/5 before Bavuma got out on a catch with less than 5 overs left.
The Ability To Pick Right Bowlers and All-Rounders Really Impacted Performance
As Temba Bavuma did have an absolutely amazing knock and showcased tons of ability when batting, especially with other rising stars, another thing that stood out was his team selection. Instead of just going with a very basic rotation that many thought would work of replacing Rabada for Bosch, he went ahead and gave Prenelan Subrayen his debut. Someone who had been waiting in the domestic circuit for almost 12 years, Bavuma understood this current Aussies squad wasn’t strong with spin, so he chose a spinning all-rounder. To return the favor, Subrayen picked up one wicket and went for an economy of 4.60, while seeming unstoppable towards the middle when Australia seemed to get off to a fiery start.
Preferring him and Maharaj over two spinners helped South Africa’s unit go from allowing a 60-0 score to one of 89/6. Talking about Bavuma’s selection of Maharaj, he believed in the left-handed spinner to bowl all 10 overs, which ended up occurring at just over 3.3 runs an over and 5 wickets. Although his batting wasn’t as class today, his bowling made up more than enough while also keeping Wiaan Mulder in the mix as a strong batsman that could also be favorable in pace attacks against lefties. Lastly, knowing Nandre Burger was a left-handed pacer, his plan was to keep only one right-handed piece in Ngidi so that they could finish off the Aussies’ batting attack. With his fielding also on point, one major batting substitution he had made was moving Breetzke to two-down because he bats faster than Markram, while the former opener would take over an older Rassie van Der Dussen. These tactical points, really boded well with his ability to bat and help South Africa win by a lot.
