South Africa Women delivered one of the most dominant performances of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, defeating Netherlands Women by 88 runs after posting a mammoth 208/1 in their 20 overs. A stunning unbeaten century from Tazmin Brits and a ruthless bowling display ensured the Proteas remained in complete control throughout the contest. While the Netherlands showed brief signs of resistance, they ultimately finished on 120/8, falling well short of the imposing target.
Tazmin Brits and Anneke Dercksen Tear Apart Dutch Bowling Attack
After being put in to bat, South Africa got off to a confident start through captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits. Wolvaardt played a classy supporting role, scoring 45 runs from 36 balls with six fours as the opening pair added 121 runs for the first wicket in just 13.3 overs.
While Wolvaardt anchored one end, Brits gradually shifted gears and began targeting anything loose. She punished the Dutch bowlers through the covers and square of the wicket, reaching her half-century before accelerating dramatically in the final overs. Wolvaardt’s dismissal to Hannah Landheer at 121/1 briefly gave the Netherlands hope, but that optimism disappeared almost immediately.
Anneke Dercksen arrived at the crease and completely changed the pace of the innings. The all-rounder smashed an unbeaten 37 from just 16 deliveries at a strike rate of 231.25, while Brits continued her assault to finish unbeaten on 114 from 69 balls, an innings that included 15 fours and three sixes.
The defining phase of the match came after the first wicket fell. Brits and Dercksen combined for an unbeaten 87-run partnership from only 39 balls, turning a strong total into a massive one. The Netherlands bowlers had no answers as boundaries flowed regularly in the death overs. Silver Siegers endured a difficult outing, conceding 60 runs in her four overs, while Iris Zwilling leaked 45 runs from her spell. Several misfields in the deep and missed opportunities to cut off boundaries further increased the pressure on the Dutch side as South Africa raced past the 200-run mark.
South Africa’s Bowlers Complete a Clinical All-Round Performance
Chasing 209, Netherlands needed an explosive start but found scoring difficult against South Africa’s disciplined attack. Shuchi Khurana tried to keep the chase alive with an aggressive 36 from 30 balls, striking six fours, while Phebe Molkenboer battled hard for 41 from 41 deliveries. Sterre Kalis also contributed 26 from 28 balls, but the required run rate kept climbing throughout the innings.
The Dutch side reached 58/1 before Chloe Tryon provided the breakthrough by dismissing Khurana in the eighth over. From that point onward, South Africa tightened their grip on the contest. Kalis departed at 100/2 in the 15th over, and when Molkenboer was run out by a sharp piece of fielding from Dane van Niekerk at 110/3, the chase effectively slipped away.
South Africa’s bowlers maintained relentless pressure during the closing stages. Chloe Tryon was outstanding with figures of 2/16 from four overs, using her variations brilliantly to deny the batters any momentum. Ayabonga Khaka then ripped through the lower order, claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs from her three overs, including the dismissals of Babette de Leede, Iris Zwilling and Hannah Landheer. Nadine de Klerk and Shabnim Ismail chipped in with a wicket each, while Marizanne Kapp conceded just 11 runs from her three overs at an economy rate of 3.67.
As wickets continued to fall, Netherlands lost six wickets for just 20 runs and finished on 120/8. South Africa’s sharp catching, disciplined bowling and energetic fielding ensured there would be no late comeback, sealing a comprehensive victory that highlighted their strength in every department. Tazmin Brits’ magnificent unbeaten century deservedly stole the headlines, but the Proteas’ complete team performance was equally impressive as they strengthened their position in the tournament.
