Sri Lanka Women held their composure under immense pressure to register a thrilling three-wicket victory over Scotland Women in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Chasing 152, Sri Lanka reached 154/7 with just one ball remaining after a dramatic final over that included an injury to Scotland’s bowler and a replacement completing the over. Scotland fought brilliantly with both bat and ball, but Sri Lanka’s experience in crunch moments proved decisive in one of the most exciting matches of the tournament.
Scotland’s Late Surge Gives Sri Lanka a Challenging Target
After being asked to bat, Scotland lost Katherine Fraser for 12 in the fifth over when Mithali Ayodhya Bandara struck the first blow. Captain Kathryn Bryce then joined Darcey Carter, and the pair rebuilt the innings with a 33-run partnership before Kavisha Dilhari dismissed Bryce for 23 with a sharp return catch in the 10th over. Carter continued to anchor the innings with a steady 34 off 36 balls before Sugandika Kumari removed her in the 14th over.
Scotland’s strongest phase came through Sarah Bryce and Ailsa Lister, who stitched together a crucial 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Sarah Bryce remained unbeaten on 47 from 33 deliveries, while Lister attacked with 26 off 17 balls, hitting four fours. Just when Scotland looked set for a total beyond 160, Sri Lanka produced an excellent finish. Nilakshi de Silva’s direct-hit run-out sent Lister back in the 19th over, Priyanaz Chatterji was run out on the very next ball after a mix-up, and Pippa Sproul departed for a first-ball duck in the final over. Those late wickets restricted Scotland to 151/6, with Mithali Ayodhya Bandara finishing with two wickets, while Kavisha Dilhari and Sugandika Kumari chipped in with one each.
Final-Over Drama Ends Scotland’s Brave Fight as Sri Lanka Hold Their Nerve
Sri Lanka launched the chase aggressively through captain Chamari Athapaththu, who hammered 33 from just 16 balls with six fours and a six before Katherine Fraser dismissed her in the sixth over. Harshitha Samarawickrama added a valuable 27, Hasini Perera scored 23, and despite losing wickets at regular intervals, Nilakshi de Silva remained calm at the crease with an unbeaten 21 to keep Sri Lanka within touching distance of the target.
Scotland’s bowlers ensured the chase remained alive throughout. Kathryn Bryce claimed two important wickets, Rachel Slater removed two batters, Katherine Fraser also picked up two wickets, while Kirstie Gordon struck once. Scotland backed up their bowling with some outstanding catching, although a couple of small fielding lapses and extra runs proved costly in such a close contest.
The biggest turning point arrived in the 20th over, when Sri Lanka needed eight runs from the final six deliveries. Scotland’s designated bowler suffered an injury after beginning the over and was unable to continue, forcing Priyanaz Chatterji to complete the remaining deliveries under immense pressure. The unexpected interruption changed the rhythm of the contest, but Nilakshi de Silva and Sugandika Kumari stayed composed, rotated the strike smartly, and found the boundary when required. Sri Lanka eventually crossed the finish line at 154/7 with one ball to spare, sealing a memorable three-wicket victory.
Scotland will take plenty of positives from a spirited performance that pushed Sri Lanka until the final delivery. However, Sri Lanka’s clinical death bowling, disciplined fielding, Athapaththu’s explosive start, and calm finishing under pressure ensured they walked away with two crucial points in a match that will be remembered for its dramatic final-over twist.
