SL vs NZ: Sri Lanka Win A Dramatic Thriller Against New Zealand

Under the bright lights of the Women’s T20 World Cup, Sri Lanka Women produced a stunning comeback to defeat New Zealand Women by five wickets with just two balls remaining in a nail-biting contest. The match had everything a cricket fan could ask for — aggressive batting, sudden collapses, pressure moments, brilliant fielding efforts, and a fearless finish that kept the result alive till the final over. While New Zealand looked in control for most of the game, Sri Lanka held their nerve when it mattered the most and turned the chase into a memorable victory.

New Zealand Build Strong Total but Sri Lanka Stay Alive

New Zealand Women finished with 150/6 in 20 overs after recovering from an early setback in the very first over when wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze was dismissed for 4 runs by Mithali Ayodhya Bandara. Georgia Plimmer tried to settle the innings with 18 runs from 22 balls, but the real momentum came through the experienced pair of Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine. Kerr played a composed innings of 45 runs off 36 deliveries with five fours, while Devine attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers with 45 runs from only 30 balls at a strike rate of 150.

The partnership between Kerr and Devine looked dangerous as New Zealand crossed the 100-run mark comfortably, but Sri Lanka slowly dragged themselves back into the contest through disciplined bowling during the death overs. Kavisha Dilhari produced one of the key moments of the innings when she dismissed both Amelia Kerr and Sophie Devine at crucial stages, eventually finishing with two wickets in her four-over spell. Chamari Athapaththu and Nimasha Meepage also chipped in with important wickets to stop New Zealand from reaching a bigger total.

New Zealand had the chance to completely dominate in the final overs, but Sri Lanka’s fielders kept fighting and restricted the flow of boundaries. The turning point quietly arrived in the 18th over when Sophie Devine’s dismissal shifted the momentum back toward Sri Lanka. Instead of finishing with around 170, New Zealand were restricted to 150, and that small difference later became massive.

Nilakshi de Silva Turns Pressure Into Glory

Sri Lanka’s chase started fearlessly as Chamari Athapaththu smashed 27 runs from just 19 balls with four Fours and a six, while Vishmi Gunaratne added another 17 runs. At 45/0 inside six overs, Sri Lanka appeared to be cruising toward victory, but the game suddenly changed direction within a few overs. Breearne Illing removed Athapaththu, Nensi Patel dismissed both Gunaratne and Harshitha Samarawickrama, and Sri Lanka collapsed from 45/0 to 55/4.

New Zealand’s fielding intensity increased dramatically during the middle overs as Amelia Kerr and Jess Kerr combined for two sharp run outs that removed Hasini Perera and Kavisha Dilhari. Those moments pushed Sri Lanka deep under pressure, and the match started slipping away from them. The pressure became even greater when Sri Lanka needed nearly 50 runs from the final five overs with only a few wickets remaining.

Playing with calmness under pressure, Nilakshika de Silva remained unbeaten on 54 runs from 37 balls with five fours and one six, anchoring Sri Lanka’s comeback beautifully. Nilakshika de Silva found boundaries exactly when the chase was slowing down and rotated strike smartly against New Zealand’s experienced bowlers. Kaushani Nuthyangana then played the perfect supporting role with a fearless unbeaten 24 off just 14 deliveries, attacking the bowlers at the death and refusing to let the required run rate rise too high.

New Zealand also suffered through small fielding lapses and missed half-chances in the final overs, and Sri Lanka grabbed that opportunity brilliantly. Sophie Devine’s final over became extremely tense as Sri Lanka chased down the target with two balls still left in the innings. The winning moment sparked huge celebrations as Sri Lanka completed one of their most dramatic victories of the tournament.

What made this match unforgettable was the way momentum kept changing every few overs. New Zealand controlled the contest at different stages with both bat and ball, but Sri Lanka stayed calmer in the pressure moments and finished stronger. From dramatic collapses to a nerve-filled final over, the game kept everyone guessing until the very last ball.
