Heading into the first T20I between two sides trying to get the nessacary training for their huge tournament coming up, this match will be important in order to figure out how their intial pieces look within all three aspects. As South Africa come in after not played international cricket in almost a month, this will be vital for them to understand what playing against each nation’s best is like.
With the SA20 tournament coming to an end, players like Ryan Rickleton, Kwena Maphaka, and more will make their debut in World Cups, while most of the eyes will be on Dewald Brevis. A unit that had a very tough series last time out against India at the international stage, captain Aiden Markram will go in with a very different and confident approach.
Meanwhile, West Indies are hoping to prove that they can find that previous stride which had always guided their teams in the past. Seeing that they have won two seperate World Cups and looking to march for a third, these matches will be important for them to understand the conditions before heading somewhere where they created history last time out.
Knowing there will be no Nicholas Pooran around for the first in a while, the hope is for them to find their next main closer, while also continuing to build that bowling attack which could potentially be feared. As Shai Hope may potentially regain his captinancy after having a long stint last year, it will be interesting to see his style when under pressure.
South Africa: Power and Style Will Dominate This Lineup From Top To Bottom
Looking at South Africa’s batting attack, it is pretty clear that this group has a great mix that will help them have immense depth. Opener Quinton De Kock coming out of retirement was a huge revelation for this group as the left-handed piece continues playing wonderful sweeps and strokes.
Someone that has amassed over 2,700 runs in 100+ matches, Quinton de Kock’s ability to stay consistent and always score at a high rate will let opposing opener Jason Smith settle in from the other end. Knowing that Smith will be under a lot of pressure in this series, it is due to him potentially losing his spot to Ryan Rickleton, 381 runs during 18 matches, who got re-added after having a historic SA20 season.
With the openers being selected from these potential three, one-down will be captain Aiden Markram who has always been talked highly about his shot-making ability and aggressiveness. As he has scored 1,577 runs in 66 matches, this is one of those players meant for big-time matches and innings.
After Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs has been known as a very posh batsmen who could be under a lot of stress too because his recent performances hasn’t backed up the way people talk about him. With Dewald Brevis coming in too, he will be the major factor on this unit as someone that has scored 469 runs in 19 matches and could clearly be their top finisher. Closing it out, Marco Jansen and George Linde should be key threats that can add a lot of vital runs to the end.
South Africa: Pacers Should Continue Being The Main Foundation With Spinners Developing As Well
When we see the way this Proteas unit bowls, all their success is due to the credit of having a stacked attack which features all types of pieces. Talking about pacers, their main one in Kagiso Rabada will return after a while and hopes to build on 77 wickets during 70 matches. Knowing that he will deliver at a very high speed and always be pin-point on where the ball is targeted.
Lungi Ngidi is another piece to keep an eye on as he provides tons of wickets too. Someone whose taken 75 so far in his short time, the thing that is so special about his bowling is that he provides amazing bouncers at any length and can always angle it towards the stumps, where batters may have to reach very high.
Although he tends to give up a lot of runs when under pressure, his height will always be a big factor in stopping batsmen from running away with the innings. Similarly, Marco Jansen will provide this style from the left-end and has always been their top option in death overs. With the ability to pull back at the right time and hit the right line, his yorkers have been another key aspect of his game which allow him to clean up anyone trying to take him deep.
For spinners, Keshav Maharaj, 38 wickets in 40 matches, and George Linde, should both continue providing turn from the left-end and confuse batsmen from going from one end to another.
West Indies: A Very New Look Unit Is Going To Make One Practice Run
For West Indies, their batting unit should look very different from previous years and it will be interesting to see how they turn out. Opening will be Brandon King, 14 half-centuries, as he is a name whose made a great epic rise. Scoring over 1,500 runs in this format from the right-end, he is known for finding the boundaries consistentley and really been able to force the ball through several gaps.
On the other end, Johnson Charles could potentially be playing in his final World Cup and is known more for his power style. Another batter that is pretty close to 2,000 runs on this unit in T20I cricket, there is a chance he could amass it throughout these next several matches.
Knowing that Shai Hope is supposed to be their masterpiece at one-down, this a player that can play any format with class and also understands how to stay on track with the number of balls available. Having just recently crossed the 1,000-mark in runs, it will be interesting to see if they bring in Alick Athanze or just move finisher Sherfane Rutherford to two-down.
As Rutherford was a piece that has recently dominated all of the franchise teams he’s played for, there is hope for him to finally get back in form on the international level. With Rovman Powell, long-time power hitter, also being in the mix, this unit should get a lot of support from other pieces like Romario Shepard and Jason Holder to finish it off.
West Indies: Bowling Attack Hopes To Show Improvements After A Tough Winter and Summer
On the bowling topic, it has become pretty clear that this West Indies unit needs to grow in their bowling department in order to be a complete unit at the World Cup. Shamar Joesph, 16 wickets in 14 matches, has finally comeback after a long period of injuries and should continue providing that firepower with his high-paced bowling.
Seeing Jason Holder come from the same end, this will be the most veteran piece of the group and should get towards 100 wickets in his career, while Romario Shepard will try getting high-impactful wickets despite a rough economy. Having Jayden Seals finally in this department as well, his height plus stability will provide a lot of swing, with major spinners including left-handed Gudakesh Motie, plus Akeal Hoesin.
