In a masterclass of modern-day T20 batting and leadership, Gujarat Titans (GT) captain Shubman Gill orchestrated a comprehensive 77-run demolition of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on May 9. GT now sits comfortably in the second position on the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 points table. Much of this was possible due to Shubman Gill’s captain’s knock – a blistering 84 off just 44 deliveries – which did more than just set the foundation for GT’s season-high total of 229/4; it served as a statement against a formidable Rajasthan side.
As teams work toward playoff qualification, this match served as a reminder that GT remains as top contenders. Beyond his own batting, Gill’s sharp field placements and bowling rotations stifled the Royals’ chase, forcing a collapse that saw the hosts bundled out for just 152. The victory not only propelled the Titans into a strong position on the table but also underscored Gill’s evolution into one of the tournament’s most clinical captains.
Shubman Gill leading from the front
Walking in with GT needing a statement performance in the business end of the tournament, Shubman Gill immediately set the tone with his trademark fluency through the offside and fearless intent against the new ball. He partnered with Sai Sudharsan, who scored a solid 55 off 36, and together they stitched a commanding 118-run partnership in just 10.5 overs. Gill’s timing was extraordinary, as he hammered nine boundaries and three towering sixes.
Even a mid-innings ankle scare couldn’t stop the skipper; he pushed through the pain to continue his assault on the RR bowling attack, eventually falling for 84. Late-innings cameos from Washington Sundar, who struck 37 off 20, and Rahul Tewatia ensured GT capitalised on a chaotic final over, propelling them to their season-high score of 229/4.
RR’s chase began with a spark of hope as their teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blazed 36 off just 16 balls. However, Shubman Gill’s decision to use his premier pace duo of Kagiso Rabada and Mohammed Siraj paid off, as they struck early to remove the dangerous Sooryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The Royals were completely stalled as Gill rotated his bowlers with surgical precision, never allowing the RR batters to settle into any sort of rhythm. Gill’s tactical awareness as a captain has become increasingly evident; rather than slowing down against spin, Gujarat continued attacking proactively, while Rajasthan kept looking for an opportunity to gain any sort of control.
Shubman Gill was seen orchestrating all the field placements and his team’s tactics with extreme composure and clarity, which allowed him to navigate every high-pressure situation effectively. He introduced Rashid Khan in the eighth over, who immediately dismantled the chase by dismissing Dhruv Jurel and Donovan Ferreira. Rashid finished with vintage figures of 4/33, ensuring Rajasthan never recovered.
