Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani is A great box office hit. Karan Johar presented Rock aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani with the perfect and tested Bollywood drama masala mix which shows issues like stereotyping.

Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh were phenomenal in expressing their roles. The movie has sparked the 90s wala romance with a pinch of modern tadka.

Rock aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani cast brings the best especially the OG couple back

The film talks about the Punjabi family where Rocky is a self-centered human who is all about partying and staying away from the actual world. Meanwhile, Rani Chatterjee is a Bengali generalist who is self-aware and enlightened.

The movie starts when Rocky finds a picture in his grandfather’s (Dharmendra) diary of Jamini Chatterjee (Shabana Azmi) who is Rani’s grandmother. They were lovers who could not break the ties of a loveless marriage and keep those pretty moments with each other to live the rest of their life.

The movie describes the perfect contradictions in families

Rani’s father (Tota Roy Chowdhury) is a phenomenal Kathak dancer while her mother (Churnee Chatterjee) is an English professor who they call Shashi Tharoor of the family.

Meanwhile Rocky has a sweet business run by her grandmother Dhanlakshmi (Jaya Bachchan). She is a patriarchal mindset that set up misogynistic behavior in the family. Her father Tajiri (Aamir Bashir) has also treated his wife (Kshitee Jog) like a doormat. He also believes that his daughter needs to be married off without any concern just because of her physical appearance.

Rocky aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani is about convincing their in-laws to overcome cultural differences and acceptance

When the couple realizes that it is more than just physical attraction they convince their in-laws to accept them despite differences.

It is not about Rocky’s family being patriarchal; Rani’s family also stereotyped Rocky for common misunderstanding. Eventually, the journey shifts over understanding each other.

Good points

  • The movie perfectly depicts the trending cultural difference theme.
  • The rare moments where it shows patriarchy isn’t about geography.
  • The families give lessons of doing something that they cannot break because of social conditioning instead of cutting the wings of their grandchild.
  • Jaya Bachchan’s character as a misogynist matriarch who indulges in her own superiority was perfectly shown as Dhanlakshmi in the movie. The “keh Diya bas keh Diya” of Amitabh Bachchan by Dhanlakshmi was iconic.
  • The chiffon saree of Alia Bhatt is highlighted and gives some major saree goals of Bollywood heroines.

Bad

  • The old melodies were overused in the movie mainly when Rani’s father and Rocky perform Kathak together.
  • Unnecessary extravagant set of Karan Johar.
  • Too many misogynistic okay references like checking out Rocky.

It is a 4 stars movie out of 5 stars.
