Following India’s devastating loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, Rahul Dravid believed there was unresolved business and decided to prolong his time as head coach, according to BCCI secretary Jay Shah. After helping India win the 2024 T20 World Cup, Dravid is now more than happy to resign from the top position in order to focus on his family obligations.

After a torturous 17-year wait, Team India became victorious in the T20 World Cup on Saturday in Barbados, defeating South Africa by a margin of 7 runs. Rahul Dravid’s final game as the Indian cricket team’s coach was the T20 World Cup final. Following the ODI World Cup last year, Dravid’s contract was about to expire, but the BCCI granted him a brief extension that would remain until the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rahul Dravid Decided To Quit Because Of Family Commitments

According to Shah, Dravid told him he wanted to leave the squad for personal reasons, therefore the board decided not to pressure him into staying longer.

“He (Dravid) told me that due to family commitments he wants to quit and we respect his decision. I didn’t force him to extend,” Shah told reporters in Barbados.

“Rahul bhai has served Indian cricket for the past five and half years. He was director of the National Cricket Academy for three years and then for the past two and half years, he served as head coach of Team India,” he added.

Rohit Sharma led the side to the title before declaring his intention to retire from Twenty20 international cricket, but Shah believes that Dravid’s contribution was just as important.

“Rahul Dravid’s role is as important as Rohit Sharma in this T20 World Cup title triumph. He is a man, who took the team to the 2023 ODI World Cup final and didn’t leave because he wanted to finish the job,” Shah said.

A five-match T20I bilateral series between Zimbabwe and a youthful Indian squad, captained by Shubman Gill, will begin later this week. Shah is optimistic that India’s 11-year ICC trophy drought will end and their title run will continue.

“I would want India to win all the titles. We have the biggest bench strength, only three players from this team are going to Zimbabwe. We can field three teams if the need arises,” he said.
