PBKS VS RCB: PBKS Aims To Return To Winning Ways In Must-Win Clash.

Fresh off a 5-match losing streak at present, Punjab Kings (PBKS) will aim to return to winning ways when they clash with table-toppers and defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday afternoon at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. PBKS are yet to get a win in the month of May with 6 wins and a No Result coming in the month of April. The stocks have fallen and for Shreyas Iyer, this is a huge game as a loss could mean catastrophic with teams below them like RR hot on their heels.

RCB, on the other hand, have won their last two home games in Raipur against MI and KKR and so the Rajat Patidar led side are well-placed with 16 points from 12 games and a win here will officially take them into the playoffs. They have fewer concerns with only the unavailability of Phil Salt and Jitesh Sharma’s batting form alongside Romario Shepherd as well. RCB too won’t want to give an inch.

Overview.

The stage is set for a marquee clash of IPL 2026 as the Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosts Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. It is the repeat of last season’s grand finale where PBKS lost to RCB in Ahmedabad and the home team will want to get the revenge on the defending champions when they need it the most. Punjab Kings have had a real downfall recently losing all their matches in May and will want to bounce back in this clash. This is also the last match in Dharamsala in the league stage.

Such is the nature of this tournament that we haven’t yet had a team officially qualified for the playoffs after 60 matches have been played. This is the beauty of this league. RCB are on top of the points table at this stage, with 16 points from 12 games, winning 8 and losing 4 games. The defending champions have a real chance to be the first side to have a Q beside them and for that they have to beat PBKS, a team that the Rajat Patidar-led unit beat three times in four outings, including the finale, in 2025.

Punjab Kings had a stellar start to the season, winning six of their first seven games and leading the points tally for a month. But a sudden dip has seen them lose five on the bounce. They are still hanging in the top four, with 13 points in 12 games. A defeat at the hands of RCB in this game will put them under serious pressure.

RCB are coming off two vital wins from their Raipur leg. Thanks to Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Krunal Pandya, they managed to sneak past the finishing line in a last-ball thriller against Mumbai Indians to come back from their defeat to Lucknow Super Giants. Then it was a Virat Kohli show against Kolkata Knight Riders as the talisman scored his 9th IPL ton, helping RCB to comfortably chase down 193 with six wickets in hand. The chasemaster led the way, returning to form after consecutive ducks.

The defending champions still have a few concerns. Suyash Sharma and Romario Shepherd haven’t been at their best this season. They were dropped in the last game, with Venkatesh Iyer and Jacob Duffy getting a game. The former didn’t get a chance to bat, while the latter was expensive. The middle order hasn’t quite continued in the way they started. Tim David has been blowing hot and cold, while Jitesh Sharma has had a forgettable season.

Speaking of Punjab Kings, they had most of the bases covered in the first half of the season. Suddenly, they have been found wanting. They have been guilty of dropping plenty of catches and failed to execute with the ball despite chopping and changing a few bowling options. These are some reasons for their continued downfall in recent times.

Four of their last five defeats have come while defending a total. Even the game they lost chasing, they conceded one too many runs early on. The batters have managed to get the scores in excess of 200 on a regular basis, but their bowling attack, with a lack of support from the fielding, has been in the headlines.

PBKS’ batting really struggled against MI in their last game, with only Prabhsimran Singh hitting a fifty. They were reduced to 140/7 at one stage, but thanks to a couple of handy cameos from Azmatullah Omarzai, Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett, they still reached the magic number 200. Omarzai shone with the ball, too, but the likes of Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett continued to be lacklustre with the ball. Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal were doing well in the earlier overs, but failed to contain the batters in the slog overs as PBKS failed to defend 72 runs in the last five overs.

Along with their bowling, Punjab need their middle order, including their captain Shreays Iyer, to come good in a must-win game like this. So, can RCB win three in a row, and hand PBKS their sixth defeat on the bounce and become the first team to qualify for the playoffs? Or will PBKS break their losing streak and boost their chances with a win? Only time will tell.

Head-To-Head.

PBKS and RCB have played against each other in a total of 37 matches in which PBKS have won 18 while RCB have won 19. In Dharamsala, they have played two matches and it’s 1-1 between the two teams. In the last 10 matches, it is 7-3 in RCB’s favour and it is 4-1 to the visitors in the last 5 matches. Last season, it was 3-1 to RCB including the win in the final.

Pitch and Weather Report.

The pitch in Dharamsala tends to offer high scoring matches with some pace and bounce on offer. Fast bowlers will extract plenty of swing and seam movement with the new ball. The ball also travels quickly off the bat due to the venue’s high altitude. Since it is an afternoon game, there will be no dew. The toss may not be a huge factor. One can bat first and win, but the teams winning the toss will still opt to chase one feels as the pitch won’t change a great deal. The average score overall is 180-185 but expect 200+ if it is a belter of a pitch.

The weather in Dharamsala will be pleasant with temperatures around 23-28 degrees Celsius. There is a threat of a passing shower or dust storm with a chance of 15-45% chance of rain. But, a full washout is unlikely. It is an afternoon clash at 3:30 PM IST and so dew will have minimal to zero impact in this match.

Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sides.

Here, we will predict the probable playing XIs of both sides.

PBKS XI: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer (c), Suryansh Shedge, Azmatullah Omarzai, Shashank Singh/Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, Harpreet Brar, Arshdeep Singh, Vyshak Vijaykumar/Xavier Bartlett/Lockie Ferguson.

RCB XI: Jacob Bethell/Jordan Cox, Virat Kohli, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar (c), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Venkatesh Iyer, Tim David, Krunal Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Josh Hazlewood, Rasikh Salam Dar, Suyash Sharma/Jacob Duffy.

Key Players to watch out for in this clash.

Prabhsimran Singh: Prabhsimran Singh has been a consistent performer for the Punjab Kings this season. He has really applied himself while playing the natural game and has scored runs as well. He will be keen to continue his good run and go big against a quality bowling line-up like RCB. He would want to shine with their tournament on the line.

Arshdeep Singh: Arshdeep Singh has been PBKS’ best bowler in recent times as he has shown great control in all phases of the game. He might have picked lesser wickets than others, but at least he has not leaked runs like other bowlers. Yes, he will want to strike with the new ball and get early wickets to put RCB on the back foot.

Virat Kohli: He is Mr. Consistent in IPL history and still RCB’s heartbeat. Virat Kohli roared back into form with a glorious hundred against KKR in Raipur. The chase master will look to continue his good run as he is hungry for runs and will want to do well for his side. If Virat gets going, and it won’t be easy for him, then PBKS will have a long day to contend in Dharamsala.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar: The current Purple Cap holder, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, is turning back the clock. He has been at his lethal best in the power play and even in the death overs, he has done well. Against MI, he was fantastic with the ball and hit a six at the clutch moment for his side. Against KKR, too he kept things under check. Bhuvneshwar will be important with the new ball as if he gets wickets, PBKS will feel the heat in Dharamsala. If there is swing and seam, Bhuvneshwar will be handful.

Key Stats and Records to look out for in this clash.

  • Virat Kohli loves PBKS as he has accumulated 1159 runs against them, the most by any batter against the Kings.
  • The PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer will be leading in his 100th IPL match, and has a great captaincy record.

Predicted/Possible Outcome of the Match.

It is tough to predict a winner in IPL cricket. Any team wherever placed in the table can beat anyone and this season has shown us that. It’s 4th vs 1st in this clash. If we go by current form, RCB are definitely the favourites as PBKS do not have a good home record in Dharamsala. But the Kings will be confident and determined to upstage the table-toppers and defending champions RCB. This game can go either way.

RCB are the favouirtes, but count PBKS out at your own peril. Let’s see how the game pans out in Dharamsala.
