CSK lost yet another game while chasing this season. Their struggle in chasing a 180+ score total continues. But this time, they showed some intent to chase and came close to the target, which is a great positive for the side. PBKS continues their domination this season by winning 3 in 4 games so far. CSK couldn’t chase 220, eventually falling short by 18 runs.
PBKS’ dominance over CSK
CSK has been the most successful side of the league and has had great numbers against most of the teams in the IPL. These two teams have faced each other in 31 games, and CSK has won 16 times, and PBKS has won 15. Still, CSK is leading the head-to-head record, but things are not the same in recent years.
PBKS has won 6 out of the last 8 games between these two sides. This dominance started from the last league of 2021, where PBKS bundled CSK for 134 runs and chased it easily with the help of KL Rahul’s 98* off 42 balls. That was KL’s last game with PBKS as well.
Ravichandran Ashwin vs Glenn Maxwell
This is one of the biggest face-offs in the IPL. It started in 2014, when Maxwell had his dream IPL season. He was in red-hot form and demolished Ashwin in that season. CSK faced Punjab in 3 matches in that season and lost all. Maxwell played a crucial role in 2 matches.
He smashed 71 runs off just 27 balls against Ashwin in that season. He got out to him only once, that was in the qualifier 2, where he got out for a Golden duck vs Ashwin. Ashwin, who was a calm person on the field usually, lost his cool and gave him a send-off. That was the damage done by Maxwell to him in that year.
Yesterday, Maxwell got out to the second ball he faced from Ashwin. Ashwin picked up his wicket before he created any damage. Overall in IPL, Glenn Maxwell had scored 141 runs from 72 balls vs Ashwin and got out 4 times.
CSK in chases
CSK had lost 4 consecutive matches while chasing in this IPL so far. This is the first time that CSK has failed to chase the target four consecutive times. It’s sad to see a team that is known for its chasing struggling like this. Hope they bounce back soon.
Ruturaj Gaikwad not up to mark in big chases
CSK’s captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s stats in 180+ chases have been a concern for the team. As a captain and a top-order batter, he should step up in those big chases. But while chasing more than 180 runs, in 11 innings, he had scored only 148 runs with an average of 13.4. He scored only one half-century.
If he started to contribute to those big chases, CSK would look like a different side in chasing.
Priyansh Arya’s 100
Priyansh Arya scored 103 runs off 42 balls, and he was the difference between the sides. He completed his century in 39 balls, which is the 2nd fastest century by an Indian in IPL next to Yusuf Pathan’s 37-ball hundred vs MI in 2010. Overall, it is the 4th fastest century in IPL. He shares the 4th place with the Australian legend Travis Head.
He is the 3rd Punjab player to hit a century against CSK. Paul Valthaty ( 2011 ) and Virender Sehwag ( 2014 ) have done it previously.
