Former England skipper Alastair Cook has high hopes from his former teammate Joe Root that he could surpass Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most runs in the longest format of the game. He also believes that former England can also be the first man to reach 16,000 run mark. Root recently surpassed Cook in the Test run-scoring chart during his double century in the first Test of the ongoing Pakistan series.

The former England captain Joe Root is fifth on the list with his tally of 12,721 runs in 149 matches including the first innings of the third test of the ongoing Pakistan series at Rawalpindi. Sachin Tendulkar has 15,921 runs in his 200-Test appearances for India and he is at the top of the list for most runs.

Root has chance to surpass Tendulkar, says Cook

In an interaction with ICC after his induction to the Hall of Fame, Cook talked about the possiblity of another World Record by Joe Root as he believes there is a chance to surpass Tendulkar’s record for most runs in Test cricket.

“I think Joe Root could set a mark, certainly on an English side, that’ll be very hard to beat. But you just never know. I hope he can get very close, if not be the first person who scores 16,000 Test runs. It’d be a great achievement,” Cook said.

Cook also congratulated Root on becoming leading run scorer for England in the red-ball cricket.

“I watched the moment, then I rang him after the end of the play. I couldn’t think of the right words to write in a text message. So I thought I’d just ring him, see what he was up to, and make sure he had a beer in his hand, which I think he did,” added Cook.

Joe Root and Kane Williamson are the best among the ‘Fab Four’

Sir Alastair Cook feels that Root and former New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson are in the best form among the so called ‘Fab Four’. Steve Smith and Virat Kohli are other members of that group but they are struggling to score at this moment.

“I think at this precise moment in time, I find it hard to see anyone playing as well as Joe Root. Over the last year or so, of the so-called ‘Big Four’, I think Williamson and him are probably in the best form at the moment. They’re all wonderful, wonderful players, all very different, actually, in their methods and ways of playing. But one thing which kind of unites them is that hunger and desire to keep improving and keep churning out the runs,” Cook said in the same interaction.

Root is also part of the series decider of ongoing high voltage series between England and Pakistan at Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
