With less than 10 days to go before the marquee T20 World Cup 2026 commences in India and Sri Lanka, two teams will face-off in a short 3-match T20I series to fine tune their preparations as hosts Pakistan takes on Australia in a 3-match series in a matter of 4 days in Lahore. These three games will be important to get acclimatized to the sub-continental conditions and zone in on final playing XIs or get an idea about what it will be come the big tournament.
Pakistan will be led by Salman Ali Agha and they welcome back Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi back in the squad while there is no place for Haris Rauf. Naseem Shah gets an opportunity as well. Pakistan’s squad is same to that of the World Cup. But the same cannot be said for Australia. Mitchell Marsh is indeed the captain of the side but due to BBL commitments which ended on Sunday night, Marsh along with others may not play the first game. Travis Head is expected to captain in game 1 off three.
Australia have given breathers to their main players like Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David allowing them extra time to recover while Glenn Maxwell has been rested as well. Some youngsters have got the nod in this series who are not part of the World Cup squad but they will be keen to make a mark in these conditions. So, the stage is set for an intriguing series between the two teams.
Overview
The stage is set then as Pakistan and Australia begin their three-match T20 International series on Thursday, 29th January, 2026 with the opening encounter in Lahore set to play an important role in shaping preparations ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. However, there are still doubts about Pakistan’s participation in the mega event, but they are likely to be cleared in the next 3-4 days.
For Pakistan, the series comes at an ideal time as they look to settle combinations with most of their World Cup squad in place. Several senior players return to the fold, strengthening both batting and bowling departments. Pakistan are very serious about this series as their entire World Cup squad is available for it.
Pacer Shaheen Afridi, who had to leave the Big Bash League, midway last month, is returning from a knee injury. Apart from him, there will be keen interest in former skipper Babar Azam as well, who had a horrific time in the BBL for Sydney Sixers. It will be interesting to see whether Pakistan will ask him to play in the top three or in the lower middle order. Interestingly, Haris Rauf is neither in this squad nor in the World Cup squad. The pacer recently had a very good BBL season with Melbourne Stars.
The hosts will bank on their pace attack to exploit early movement, while their spinners are expected to play a key role in the middle overs on a surface that traditionally rewards smart variations. Pakistan’s batting depth and familiarity with local conditions give them added confidence, especially at a venue where they have enjoyed consistent success in recent years. Notably, Pakistan are undefeated in their last three bilateral T20I series.
Australia, on the other hand, arrived with a slightly rotated squad, with a few regular first-choice players unavailable. Many of their World Cup squad players like Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Nathan Ellis and Glenn Maxwell are unavailable for this series. Also, skipper Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis are likely to be unavailable for the first T20I as they arrived in Pakistan late due to their BBL commitments. Travis Head is expected to lead the side in Marsh’s absence.
It will be interesting to see how Cameron Green fits into the scheme of things. The tall all-rounder hasn’t played the format since August 2025 as he decided to solely focus on his Ashes preparation. Interestingly, top order batter Steve Smith, who had a wonderful BBL season, is neither part of this squad nor of the WC squad. All eyes will be on young pacer Mahil Beardman during this tour. The protege of former Australian great Dennis Lillee is yet to make his T20I debut but has had a wonderful BBL season with the title- winning team, Perth Scorchers.
The tour presents an opportunity for fringe players and youngsters to push their case, while senior batters in the side will be keen to find rhythm ahead of the global event. Australia’s strength lies in their aggressive batting approach and a bowling attack that blends pace with control, making adaptability to local conditions a crucial factor. The last time Australia played a T20I series was in November 2025 at home against India. The Kangaroos lost that series 2-1.
The contest is expected to hinge on how Australia’s power-packed middle order handles Pakistan’s spin options, and how effectively the hosts can contain Australia at the death. With Lahore often producing high-scoring matches, execution with the ball and sharp fielding could prove decisive. Looking at head-to-head stats, Australia have an upper hand over Pakistan. Both teams met each other last time in a bilateral series in November 2024 in Australia. In that series, Australia whitewashed Pakistan by a 3-0 margin.
Till now, Australia have played a T20I in Pakistan only once. The solitary match took place in April 2022 and Australia won that match by 3 wickets. The stage is set as both teams balance experimentation with the desire to start the series on a winning note. The clash on Thursday promises a competitive and high intensity opening to the Pakistan Australia T20I series. Let’s wait and watch as to who comes out on top in this fixture.
Head-To-Head
Pakistan and Australia have faced against each other in a total of 28 games in which Pakistan have won 13 games and Australia 14. One game ended in a no result. The last 10 matches between the sides sees Australia leading the head-to-head 7-3 with the Aussies winning the last 3 matches in that bilateral series in October-November 2024. Australia has the recent wood over Pakistan one can say.
Pitch & Weather Report
For starters, the game will begin at 4 PM local time which is 4:30 PM IST to preclude the possibility of winter fog interrupting the game late in the evening. The Gaddafi Stadium has produced flat, high scoring surfaces of late with quick outfields. While there’s little reason to expect anything different from the pitch itself, intermittent rain over the past few weeks have played a part in slowing the outfield down. There is no further rain expected, though, so the series should be uninterrupted.
Predicted/Probable Playing XIs of both sides
Here, we will predict the probable playing XIs of both sides.
Pakistan XI: Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Salman Agha (c), Mohammad Nawaz, Khawaja Nafay (wk), Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi/Naseem Shah, Salman Mirza, Abrar Ahmed.
Australia XI: Travis Head (c), Matthew Short, Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Green, Cooper Connolly, Mitchell Owen, Josh Philippe (wk), Xavier Bartlett, Sean Abbott, Adam Zampa, Mahil Beardman/Matthew Kuhnemann.
Key Players to watch out for in this clash
Sahibzada Farhan: He has been Pakistan’s best batter lately and been in form from the word go. He attacks in the powerplay and can clear ground comfortably. He will look to give Pakistan a head start and lay the platform for the others to follow suit. Farhan is a quality player and has the talent to do special things for Pakistan. Let’s see how he fares in this game as he has to take responsibility for Pakistan’s batting.
Abrar Ahmed: The mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed can be a game changer and chief destroyer for Pakistan against the inexperienced Australian side. Australia has the talent and big hitters but playing spin could be a task for them and so Abrar will be wanting to start the series well and put the pressure back on the opposition. If Abrar has a good series, Pakistan more or less are secured of winning this match and the series thereon.
Travis Head: Travis Head will be captaining in this first game in the absence of Mitchell Marsh. Head will want to lead from the front and show his prowess in the shortest form of the game. His score in the Test series against England was exemplary and he will want to continue that good form in this T20I series. Since, he is the captain he will want to show captain leading by example as well.
Adam Zampa: With few seniors and experienced players resting, the onus will be on spin wizard and leggie Adam Zampa to deliver the goods for Australia. Zampa is a class act and will want to start the series well. He is the most experienced bowlers among all the bowlers that will be on show for Australia and he will want to make a mark and gain confidence ahead of the big ICC event coming up soon.
Key stats and records to look forward to ahead of this clash
- Australia have only played one T20I in Pakistan previously, and it was Cameron Green’s debut on the multi-format tour in 2022.
- Pakistan are undefeated in their last three bilateral T20I series and have won three of their last five series as well.
Predicted/Possible Outcome of the match
It is the series opener and with Australia fielding a new-look team with a few experienced players, it’s tough to predict how they will perform in this series. Pakistan have got a full strength team but must guard against complacency as well. It’s too early to predict a winner. Australia will fight till the end. We will give maybe a slight edge to Pakistan at this stage but things can change and Australia know they can beat Pakistan as well. It is basically 50-50 at this stage.
Let’s see how the first of three T20Is unfolds in Lahore later today.
