In an action-packed second day at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, it was Jacob Duffy who shone through with a five-wicket haul to skittle West Indies out for 167 after New Zealand could not add a single run to their overnight score. New Zealand batted in their second innings and got to 32/0 to stretch the lead close to 100 with all 10 wickets in hand. West Indies had their moments through Shai Hope and Tagenarine Chanderpaul but they lost the plot when it mattered yet again.

Zak Foulkes and Jacob Duffy came out to resume for New Zealand in their first innings as Jayden Seales started the proceedings for West Indies. It took 3 balls for Seales to complete the formalities as he dismissed Foulkes for 4 off 16 balls. He edged it but still reviewed for the sake of it to burn it. New Zealand were bowled out for 231 in 70.3 overs with Duffy remaining unbeaten on 4 off 2 balls. Wickets were shared by the West Indies as 2 each were taken by Kemar Roach, Ojay Shields, Jayden Seales and Justin Greaves. Johann Layne and Roston Chase got a wicket each as well.
West Indies came out to bat soon with John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul coming out to bat while Matt Henry had ball in hand for New Zealand. Henry bowled a quiet over. Zak Foulkes took the ball from the other end and he removed John Campbell for 1 off 2 balls as the outside edge went to Young who pulled off a one-handed diving catch. Alick Athanaze came out to bat next. Henry kept it tight. Foulkes bowled another maiden over.
The Kiwis bowled really tight lines and lengths. Runs came in a trickle for the visitors. Athanaze got a life as Young dropped him at third slip with Henry being the unlucky bowler. Foulkes bowled another maiden over. Henry then got rid of Athanaze for 4 off 34 balls by cleaning him up as West Indies were in early trouble in their innings at 10/2 with Shai Hope joining Tagenarine Chanderpaul.
Foulkes continued as Chanderpaul survived a close LBW call as umpire’s call saved the batter. New Zealand were bowling disciplined lines and lengths. The West Indies did well to hang in there and were 16/2 in 15 overs when Drinks was taken in the morning session. Nathan Smith came into the attack for the first time next as Chanderpaul got a life now as Conway dropped a tough chance at leg gully. Jacob Duffy came into the attack as well and bowled a decent over.
Smith continued and kept things tight. Duffy bowled another miserly over. Smith delivered a maiden. Duffy continued and bowled another good over. Runs continued to come in occasional singles. Chanderpaul got a triple off Duffy. Hope broke the shackles as he punched it through covers for a boundary. Hope got a triple as well. Hope hit Smith for a boundary down the ground as the 50 came up for West Indies in 23.1 overs. Henry returned as Chanderpaul got a triple while the 50-run stand came up between the two players.
Smith continued as Chanderpaul cut him through backward point for a boundary. Chanderpaul got another lifeline as Conway put down another catch at leg gully with Henry being the unlucky bowler. Smith bowled a maiden over. Henry bowled another good over as West Indies went into Lunch at 68/2 in 29 overs recovering from a challenging start.

Jacob Duffy operated from the other end. Hope punched it past point for a boundary. Foulkes bowled another decent over as New Zealand were keeping control of the run rate. Shai Hope managed to get a triple off Duffy. Foulkes bowled a maiden over. Duffy bowled another maiden over. Hope managed to get a boundary by swivelling pull towards the deep midwicket region.
Shai Hope reached his fifty with a triple off Foulkes and got there in 83 balls. Duffy bowled another good over. Foulkes bowled a maiden over as well. Hope got hit on the right arm and was in pain but the physio worked on him and he was fine to continue. Duffy bowled a maiden. Foulkes bowled another probing over. Duffy bowled another good over. Nathan Smith came back into the attack. He bowled a decent over as West Indies reached 97/2 in 42 overs when Drinks was called in the afternoon session.
Duffy continued after the break and the no ball brought up the 100 up for West Indies in 42.5 overs. Duffy broke the stubborn stand as he removed Hope for 56 off 107 balls with 4 fours to his name thanks to excellent usage of DRS as that review changed the on-field call. Roston Chase the captain came out to bat next. Chanderpaul pulled Smith to deep backward square leg for a boundary. Duffy bowled another decent over. Smith bowled a maiden.
Matt Henry came back into the attack and removed the West Indies captain for a duck facing 8 balls. Justin Greaves came out to bat next as Henry got two in the over removing Greaves for a bronze duck playing away from the body. Tevin Imlach came out to bat next. Smith bowled another maiden over. Henry kept things tight from his end. Smith bowled another maiden.
Henry bowled another maiden as Zak Foulkes came back into the attack. Chanderpaul broke the shackles by cutting it to deep point for a boundary. Henry bowled another tight over. Foulkes bowled well and gave away 4 byes as a bonus to the batting side as West Indies reached 120/5 in 54 overs with Chanderpaul on 45* off 153 balls alongside Imlach on 3* off 22 balls. Tea was called and taken by the umpires at this stage.

Foulkes continued as Chanderpaul reached his fifty off 165 balls. Henry gifted five wides to the batting side as he went too short and over the head of the batter.
Foulkes broke through as he removed Chanderpaul for 52 off 169 balls with 3 fours to his name as Conway took a stunner at short square leg. Kemar Roach came out to bat next. He got off the mark soon. Roach got a lifeline as Michael Bracewell dropped a sitter at second slip as Henry was the unlucky bowler yet again. Smith bowled another decent over. Henry bowled another probing over. New Zealand wasted a DRS on Smith for LBW as height was a big factor here.
Smith bowled a maiden. Duffy came back into the attack and bowled another maiden as run scoring stopped. Imlach broke the shackles as he nailed the pull shot for a boundary. Duffy bowled another good over. Michael Bracewell came into the attack as we had first signs of spin in the innings. Bracewell started with a maiden over. Duffy bowled a maiden over. Bracewell continued and Roach managed to get a triple.
The sky went dark and so Rachin Ravindra was introduced into the attack. Ravindra bowled a maiden. West Indies were 157/6 in 71 overs when players went off the field for rain and bad light. Play resumed around 40 minutes later with both batters walking back out to the middle. Jacob Duffy started the proceedings after the Break. Duffy made the perfect start for the hosts after the Break as he dismissed Imlach for 14 off 66 balls with 2 fours to his name. He got hit on the gloves but still reviewed to burn a review for his side. Johann Layne came out to bat next.
Duffy got two in the over as he dismissed Layne for a duck by taking a good catch on his follow through. Jayden Seales came out to bat next. Matt Henry bowled from the other end as Roach managed to get a boundary away past Latham. Duffy continued and gifted 4 leg byes to the batting side. Henry bowled a maiden over. Duffy continued and cleaned Seales up for 2 off 7 balls who went for the slog and missed with the ball hitting the top of off-stump. Debutant Ojay Shields came out to bat next.
Duffy finished things off as well as he dismissed Shields for a bronze duck as the ball hit his pads before deflecting back onto the stumps. Duffy ended with 5-wicket haul as West Indies were bowled out for 167 in 75.4 overs after being 100/2 at one stage losing 8/67. Roach remained unbeaten on 10 off 57 balls with one boundary to his name. 29 extras given by New Zealand bowlers and fielders.
Jacob Duffy was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 5/34 in 17 overs. Matt Henry supported him well with 3/43 in 22 overs. Zak Foulkes chipped in with 2/32 in 18 overs. Nathan Smith ended with 0/39 in 15 overs. Michael Bracewell bowled 2 overs for 3 runs while Rachin Ravindra bowled an over for a maiden. New Zealand took a handy 64-run first innings lead.
New Zealand came out to bat in their second innings with Tom Latham the captain opening the batting with Devon Conway while Kemar Roach had ball in hand for West Indies. Latham managed to get a triple as New Zealand showed good intent out there. Jayden Seales took the ball from the other end. He bowled a decent over. Roach continued as Latham looked confident out there with his timing.
Seales continued as Conway stood tall and punched it away past backward point for a boundary. Seales gave away 2 byes to the batting side. Roach continued as Conway was hit on the gloves but was good to continue. The light metre was checked and it was fine to continue. Conway then drove Roach down the ground to long-off boundary. Ojay Shields came into the attack next. Latham stood tall and slapped it to deep cover point for a boundary.
With the light getting dark, Roston Chase came into the attack. Conway freed his arms and creamed it through the covers for a boundary. New Zealand were 32/0 in 7 overs with Latham batting on 14* off 19 balls with one boundary to his name while Conway has 15* off 23 balls with 3 fours to his name. 3 extras given by the fielding side. 4 bowlers used by West Indies and yet to get success in the second innings. So, New Zealand lead by 96 runs with 10 wickets in hand.
What Lies Ahead.Â
New Zealand are in control of the Test match and they will look to press home the advantage as we expect clearer skies from Day 3 onwards. They already have a 96-run lead and there is plenty of time left in the Test match. West Indies will have to make inroads and strike early in order to make a comeback in the Test match. A herculean task awaits the visitors.
