Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis returned to the squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against New Zealand. Marcus Stoinis has been recalled to the Australian T20I squad for the upcoming three-match series in New Zealand, offering him a critical chance to strengthen his bid for a place in the 2026 T20 World Cup team. Marcus Stoinis had opted out of recent series against West Indies and South Africa to participate in the Hundred franchise league but remains very much in the selectors’ plans.
Marcus Stoinis return comes as Australia prepares for the series without some key players. Cameron Green, who is nursing injuries, will focus on the Sheffield Shield and is unlikely to bowl for some time. Nathan Ellis, an important part of the T20 pace attack, is also missing the New Zealand series as he awaits the birth of his first child.
Marcus Stoinis, known for his hard-hitting batting, is likely to compete for a middle-order finisher’s role on the World Cup squad. His medium-pace bowling adds tactical flexibility, having been used with the new ball at times. Matthew Short makes a return for the New Zealand tour after recovering from a side strain. This series will be an important opportunity for him to stake his claim ahead of a tough competition for spots in Australia’s deep batting lineup.
Marcus Stoinis is also set to return to international cricket for the first time since late 2024 after missing Australia’s 5-0 sweep of West Indies and their 2-1 win over South Africa in Darwin and Cairns. The allrounder Marcus Stoinis retired from 50-over internationals in February and hasn’t held a national or state contract for the past year, but reaffirmed his desire to continue representing Australia in the shortest format during Trent Rockets’ run to the Hundred final.
The T20 freelancer and Melbourne Stars captain was also part of the Ricky Ponting-coached Punjab Kings’ runners-up finish in the Indian Premier League earlier this year and has played for franchises in South Africa and the United States since a player-of-the-match performance of 61 not out in his last appearance for Australia against Pakistan in November last year.
He faces fresh competition from Green and Owen for the power-hitting roles in Australia’s middle-order with the duo forming a formidable combination alongside Tim David in the recent series wins over West Indies and South Africa.
Marcus Stoinis marks his return to the T20I series vs NZ with a eye on 2026 T20I World Cup
Star all-rounder Marcus Stoinis is back in Australia’s T20I team after more than 10 months for the three-match away T20I series against New Zealand next month. The 2021 T20 World Cup winners will face their Trans-Tasman rivals in three T20Is on October 1, 3 and 4 at Mount Maunganui’s Bay Oval Stadium.
36-year-old Marcus Stoinis, who has scored 1245 runs and picked up 45 wickets in 74 T20Is played so far, last featured in a T20I match for Australia on November 18, 2024, in Hobart. In that fixture he scored unbeaten 61 runs from just 27 balls and helped the hosts chase down the target of 118 runs in 11.2 overs.
Mitchell Marsh will captain the Aussies, and the squad also features the likes of Matthew Short, Mitchell Owen and Xavier Bartlett. All-rounders Cameron Green and Aaron Hardie, along with wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey and pacer Nathan Ellis, are not part of the squad due to various reasons.
According to a release shared by Cricket Australia,
“Aussie selectors announced a 14-player squad for the whirlwind six-day trip to Mount Maunganui, which followed the shock retirement of Mitchell Starc from T20 internationals. Men’s Test and one-day international captain Pat Cummins will also miss the tour to manage a back issue in preparation for a blockbuster Ashes summer, while Nathan Ellis will be on paternity leave with wife Connie expecting the couple’s first child.”
“Xavier Bartlett also returns to the T20 squad with Cameron Green to prioritise the early rounds of the Sheffield Shield for Western Australia as a return to bowling looms ahead of the five-Test Ashes series,” the release added.
