Ahead of the RCB-CSK IPL 2024 clash, Mohammad Kaif praised Virat Kohli’s outstanding form, noting his current level of play makes him a formidable challenge for any bowler. Mohammad Kaif emphasised that Kohli’s performance has reached an unmatched zone.
Mohammad Kaif’s name is etched in the minds of cricket fans for his exceptional fielding and those crucial knocks that turned the tide of matches. His journey began with great promise. He captained India to victory in the U-19 World Cup in 2000, showcasing his talent as both a batsman and a fielder.
This early success translated onto the international stage. Kaif made his ODI debut in 2002, followed by his Test debut later that year. The 2002 Natwest Series final at Lord’s remains a defining moment in his career. His match-winning knock of 87 runs against England cemented his place in the team. After retiring from professional cricket in 2017, Kaif transitioned into coaching. He served as an assistant coach for the Gujarat Lions (2017) and Delhi Capitals (2019-2020), sharing his knowledge and experience with young players.
Today’s match between the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is a high-pressure clash with major playoff implications for both teams. For RCB, it’s a win-or-go-home scenario. They need to not only win the match but also win it by a significant margin of at least 18 runs to secure a spot in the playoffs. CSK, on the other hand, has a slightly less daunting task. A win or a close loss (within 18 runs) will guarantee their qualification for the next stage. This high-stakes encounter is bound to be a thrilling display of cricket, further intensified by the longstanding rivalry between the two franchises.
What Mohammad Kaif Said
RCB will take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their final league game in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 18. The hosts need a solid victory to surpass their opponents and secure the final playoff spot based on net run rate.
Speaking on Star Sports, Mohammad Kaif observed that Kohli is like a monk, remaining unaffected by his surroundings and that no bowler is likely to pose a challenge to him.
He said, “When a hermit goes to the Himalayas, he is in a different zone when he is meditating. Nothing distracts him. Whether there is a loud noise, someone shouts or cries, it doesn’t make a difference. Virat Kohli has reached that zone”
“He is not seeing the scorecard and is just in his zone and concentrating. He knows the intent with which he needs to play no matter which bowler, whether it’s a fast bowler or a spinner, is in front of him. No matter which bowler comes, he has reached a zone where there is no match-up.“
Kohli is the top run-scorer in IPL 2024, having accumulated 661 runs with a strike rate of 155.16 in 13 innings this season. Kaif also mentioned that with the mentality Kohli is playing, it is nothing but aimed for RCB’s win.
He explained, “He has come just to dominate. He has come with the passion that he will only be satisfied once he makes his team win, and that has been seen from the second match. In the first match against Chennai, he got out when he pulled a Fizz (Mutafizur Rahman) slower bouncer and (Ajinkya) Rahane took the catch.”
The former Indian cricketer further added, “From the second match against Punjab, he came determined. He was jumping down the track and hitting (Kagiso) Rabada and playing slog sweeps against spinners. You talk about the fourth or fifth gear but he has reached the 15th gear. No one will reach that level.”
In the IPL 2024 opener between RCB and CSK, Kohli was out for a 20-ball 21. However, in the second game against the Punjab Kings (PBKS), he played a match-winning innings, scoring 77 runs off 49 balls, and since then, he has been in formidable form.
