In big news coming in, former Indian cricketer and legend of the game, Yuvraj Singh, has been appointed as the assistant and batting coach of the Delhi Capitals (DC) for the IPL 2027 season. In recent years, we have seen Yuvraj Singh mentoring several prominent Indian cricketers like Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh, to name a few, but this appointment with the Delhi Capitals (DC) team will be his first coaching assignment.
The former Indian all-rounder is set to reunite with the Delhi team, having first represented them in the 2015 season after they secured his services for Rs 16 crore at the auction, which made him the most expensive player in IPL history at that time. This appointment will reunite him with Sourav Ganguly, his former captain in Indian colours, as Ganguly was recently named the head coach of the Delhi Capitals.
Yuvraj Singh’s wealth of experience is a huge asset for Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals are still looking for their elusive maiden IPL title, and this is where Yuvraj Singh will bring a wealth of experience, as he played a key role in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup triumphs. Yuvraj has also featured in 132 IPL games, playing for different franchises and has scored 2750 runs and picked up 36 wickets. His international career was stellar too, with 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20Is across 17 years.
Parth Jindal welcomes Yuvraj Singh to the DC family
Speaking to reporters, DC chairman Parth Jindal said, “We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Yuvi to the Delhi Capitals family. Yuvi is one of Indian cricket’s greatest match-winners and someone who has played a pivotal role in mentoring many of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket today. His experience, winning mindset, and ability to connect with players will be invaluable to our squad.”Â
Yuvraj Singh expresses excitement in his first reaction to being appointed to the coaching staff
Yuvraj Singh expressed excitement about beginning a new chapter with the franchise Delhi Capitals. He said, “I have an old association with the franchise and know the owners well, which makes this a special opportunity for me. I’m also looking forward to teaming up with Dada, this time as coaches. Coaching is something I am truly passionate about, and I cannot wait to get started with this extremely talented squad.”Â
With Sourav Ganguly in charge of the proceedings, the appointment of Yuvraj does not come as a surprise, as this was doing the rounds for quite a while, and now it has been confirmed by the franchise. Ganguly and Yuvraj share a great camaraderie and mutual respect, and so, this appointment was on the expected lines. But it comes with responsibilities and challenges as well for both.
This will be Yuvraj’s first role as being a coach and support staff member. Yes, he has mentored players in the past, but that is totally different to this role. Here, strategies and analysis will be made, and he has the experience of a player and a great mind at that. But he will be tested in the IPL with a team desperate for success. Sourav, on the other hand, has been the coach of Pretoria Capitals, but coaching in the IPL will be a different ball game for him.
Lots of bold calls need to be made with regard to their next captain, with Axar Patel reluctant to continue. KL Rahul could be the guy to lead, or the returning Rishabh Pant. Lots of decisions need to be taken for this team, and the mini-auction will set the tone for this team for sure. They need to do that well to claw their way back into the reckoning.
Let’s see what’s in store for all of us with regard to this development, amongst others.
